Angry The Evil that PO Do

The Climate Control system in my 300 CD is not controlling the climate. While there is warm air, it blows on the face, not on the toes. After reading many, many posts, I decided that the best first action would be to remove the ACC pushbutton unit, and resolder. The instructions I found read "just pop off the trim, and remove the screws."

Pop was not successful. After considerable prying, I had the wood piece in my hand. Just the wood piece, as the epoxy holding the wood to the aluminum backing plate had failed. (Epoxy?) At least, now I can see how it is supposed to come off.

Except it won't. Pulling, tugging, judicious prying, each yields bends in the aluminum, but the plate is not coming off. As the blood pressure increases, I decide to apply adrenaline and testosterone. I take my 90 degree pick, poke it under the edge, and pry. The plate bends, but is coming loose. I keep prying, and the plate keeps bending. Finally an edge is far enough up to grab the thing and pull.

Now the plate is off, but it is curled like a Pringle's. I can see the truly evil crime committed by the PO, or by their minion. The whole backing plate was attached to the plastic with dark grey, incredibly tough, very sticky double faced tape. About an acre of it. I do not know who did this to me, but I am certain that their Mother had a loud bark.

I'm certain that others among us have suffered worse "creative repairs." I started this thread to vent, and to give other victims a place to air their outrage. Please, tell me I'm not alone.

You better not buy my 300D from me; the stupid ACC wood is held in with (drumroll please) 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

Don't buy mine!! My woodgrain trim piece kept falling off so I used 3M body shop quality double stick tape to put it on. I covered the whole back and trimmed quite neatly with a razor blade. From what you describe I hope i never need it off.

If the 3M snot is between the wood and the aluminum backer plate, no problem.

Precisely the stuff I've been fighting. How in the world do you propose to change the light bulbs?

You can't buy mine either

My ACC wood trim was held in place by clear silicone glue. After I've had it off, it is once again held on by clear silicone glue.

Did it rattle? No.

Did it fall off? No.

Wait until you find the big glop of JB Weld that was used to stop the oil leaks at the front and rear main seals.

How was I to know that you would end up with that car?

And I'll have you know that my mother, now 95 years old and driving the crap out of her little Camry, does not have a loud bark. She will, on occasion, run out from under the porch to bite someone in the fetlock.

Solution!

I had this very same problem on another car, only with a different piece of trim. The trick is to use a can of Label & Sticker Remover, available at your local auto parts asylum. Start at the top, if possible, and spray along the edge while prying gently with a screwdriver or a small scraper. Be patient, do a little bit at a time, and be sure to have plenty of rags to catch the mess.

As for stupid POs, this almost counts, except I didn't buy the car. Once upon a time, I went to look at an aircooled Bettle for sale. Here is sample of the idiotic conversation that we had:

Me: "Where is the fuel filter?"
Aging Hippie: "It got clogged, so I just ran a piece of hose. It works fine without it."

On my '85 300D that I used to own...

I noticed that there appeared to be black silicone caulk all around the rim of the sunroof. The PO apparently had sunroof drain problems so he just kept the sunroof closed and sealed it shut with caulk (what an idiot!) . Also the drivers side rear window didnt go up and down. After I took the door panel off to investigate, I found the wires between the pillar and the door cut off completely. When asked about it, he simply stated "I don't know anything about it. I was the only one in the car all of the time so I never had the back windows down." I spliced all of the wires back together and the window worked perfectly for me.

PO of my SDL had a sound system installed. Floor speakers were fiberglass wedges, screwed into the kick panels and then finished by applying the resin to the fiberglass AND the carpeting on the panel...

I managed to rip the passenger side free, with the carpeting, so now the kick panel looks like a dog with a bad hair day.

Driver side had to be removed, the speaker prevented any travel of the parking brake pedal, PO said she never used it It broke into lots of pieces while I tried to remove the fiberglass, so I'm looking for a new 'dead' pedal...

Oh, and sound installer cut and removed a lot of the factory speaker wire, I still haven't found where the front wires went...

I would be a lot madder, but we talked her down to a really good price...
