Leaking Injector/Prechamber (w/ photos)
Hi everyone...
I am really not sure what is going on, but I think that either my injectors or prechambers are leaking (I've attached some photos). After reading several threads on this subject, I was hoping that it was the heat shields and not the injectors or prechambers causing the leak. Last night, a friend and I changed the seal rings/heat shields with new ones and the leak is still persisting (if not getting even worse). Right now, I thinking that I need new injectors and maybe even a new prechamber seal but am just guessing. Has anyone seen leaks like this before and if so what did you do to fix them? All advice from the group will be much appreciated. -Kofi P.S. I have the service manual and it is a bit confusing if the prechamber could cause a leak or if a poor injector could. If anyone could explain this to me too, I'd appreciate it!!

Kinda looks like it's leaking there, but very very little and doubt that if in fact the PC is leaking, as your photo indicates a tiny wheep, would effect performance at this stage.
Can a PC leak diesel fuel? Or is it ignighted and burned before and therefore not possible to leak wet diesel? I'm thinking Detroit, and these MB's are 4 stroke so maybe it is possible....I don't know the answer, maybe someone else can chime in. Wonder if you took some ether and cleaned the area of diesel fuel making it dry then run the engine and with a magnifying glass look real close and see if it is wheeping out of the PC or injector. You might also pour or spray some light oil over the area while its running and look and see if there area any bubbles and where they are coming from! I had a similiar problem with one of my injectors. I thought for sure it was the injector leaking between the top and the bottom of the injector. If it was the seal on the bottom of the injector where it seals in the precombustion chamber then there wouldn't be wet fuel, there would be signs of combustion gases.
In my case and I suspect in yours, It was a subtle leak in the injector return lines. When I replaced the old lines with new lines, the wetness at the base of the injector went away. Good luck. TimK

I had the same problem on several injectors. Replacing return lines took care of part, and having injectors rebuilt took care of other. (of course, now I know what nailing sounds like.)
Replace return lines first, and see what happens....

Replaced threaded return lines... still no luck
Thanks guys for the input...
I did replace the grey threaded hoses that connect each injector directly to the one adjacent to it. Not sure if I replaced the one that is plugged but can do that pretty easily. At first the shop I took it to replaced a single line when only one was leaking. That unfortunately did not solve the problem and now even more injectors are leaking. Outside of looking for cleaning them off with emery paper and looking for bubbles, I will see if there is a Bosch place around locally that can test my injectors at a reasonable price (I am assuming you can't DIY). From what you have said thus far, it is very unlikely/impossible the prechamber could be leaking around the screw socket collar? Also I have read on the threads posted bad things about the rebuilt bosch injectors (something about the spray tolerance range being higher than MB spec). Does anyone have anything else to add about this? Is it better to spend more and get MB injectors from the dealer or get rebuilt ones from Ebay or an online vendor? Thanks guys for the posts... your feedback is great!

Not sure if you have been following Tom, who is a member here and an injector specialist, mainly Bosch. He has elaborated quite a lot about the inferior replacement parts now available to rebuild Bosch injectors. Nozzles are being made in India to replace the German Bosch nozzles and are junk! He writes that about 4 out of 6 injector nozzles are poorly manufactured and perform worse than worn out nozzles!
If you don't mind spending $$$, I hear $150 for each injector will be what you'll probably pay at the dealership. Save yourself some money, spray some W-D-40 around the base of the PC, while running, it'll take you 2 minutes to determine if there is a leak from it. If not, then it's either the injector, or return hoses, IMHO.........BB |

I had a leaky injector line on my SDL. The pipes on the 617 engines seem much more robust, but I would check , it is possible that the leak is in the injector line. When I checked the archives looking for information I found a few posts where people had leaky pipes on 617s, and it could be on 616s too.

Result!!
Thanks guys... I changed the prechamber sealing rings and after some "TIME" (about 3 weeks) the residue on the block was gone. Cool stuff!! I luckily did not have to replace those VERY expensive injectors! Thanks again!
