MBZ Diesel Repowers

In your surfing or whatever, have you come across any Mercedes gassers repowered with Mercedes-Benz™ diesel engines? How about other vehicles repowered using Mercedes engines? Or, howzabout Mercedes repowered with either later model or larger Mercedes diesels? Post 'em here.

Here's one. W123 with later model OM601(?) diesel.

No.. But I've been trying to think of something good to put a 617 into for awhile now. Volvo, BMW, something worthy but not, ah, so Mercedes...

i wonder if itd be possible to stuff a 617 into an older VW jetta diesel...i used to drive a 91 with the 4cyl diesel, nice little car...slow, but nice....a 617 would really liven it up

Wolfwalker-

It would be pretty cool to set up a 617 turbo in a late 70's-early 80's BMW 3 series, or late 70's-early 80's Volvo 2 series coupe, sedan, or wagon!

this weekend, saw a totalled 300D at the yard with a chevy SBC 350 in it.
real hack job, the radiator was WELDED in to the front core support. I guess chevy radiators never go bad so he would never have reason to remove it

I've yet to drive it, but Father put a canadian 1.9L turbo diesel in my old 82 pickup I gave him, with a tall geared gasser tranny. Near as I can tell it's as fast or faster than a w123 300D. So light. It was already faster than a 240D with the tired 1.6 turbo..

But no, unless you put it in the rear of the cabin, not enough room.

It's not that I dislike the Mercedes, but the Volvo has SO MUCH aftermarket suspension wise, ditto the BMW, plus it's already geared for handling. I'd worry on the weight distro though in both cases.

now what do you see wrong with this picture? the guy performs an unheard of engine swap into his daily driver...puts 4k miles on it, and then tries to sell it, ON EBAY...i bet that thing is on a rapid downhill run, and he needs to dump it so he can recoup a little of the money he threw into it....$20k for a 6 year old vehicle with over 100k miles on both the vehicle and engine??? i pity the fool who ends up with that one....although, it is quite a clever idea...im betting it hasnt gone(in these last 4000 miles) the way he had hoped

Randy,

Some years ago there was a blue W115 220D here in town that was not originally a diesel. Think it was a 4cyl 230, if that was a valid model. The trunk badge was actually changed after the rebuild was completed, at the suggestion of the owners daughters. Never rode in it, but believe that the dash stuff, including the 'Gorilla' knob and salt-shaker glow indicator were all present. They drove the car in the 220D configuration for at least 10 years before trading it off, and never had any problems with the conversion.

The gorilla knob. I love that thing...

FWIW, I heard that somewhere on the east coast (DC mebbe) there's a W113 sporting a diesel.

Had a '68 200D once and sold it to a shop who then swapped a petrol motor into it.

There's a OM601 motor at the junkyard and thinking about taking it, what can be done with that?

Questions from other buyers for this listing
Q: What was the drivetrain used to achieve these MPG and MPH numbers? Was it the same drivetrain for both records? Thanks. Answered on Jan-16-05
A: We have a GM model 480 le transmission in it now, but a 700 r4 is also good if you build it with the diesel in mind. The Gear venders unit gives me an over drive for every gear if you like the gears are like 1 -1.5-2-2.5-3-3.5-4-4.5 (EIGHT GREARS)this keeps my tubo boost higher VIA less RPM range per gear. The shifts are much faster then I humanily could do since the unit is all computer controled. now when we are racing and proving the car the millage can drop as low as 10 mpg the 55 mpg is highway speeds and only in final overdrive which happens to be 20% above a 1 to 1 ratio of gear #3. The car is awsome, but I would stop short of calling it a "record". It's a car that wheigs well under 3,000 pounds has a powerful effiecnt diesel engine and the proper mix of gears to do the jod. The same motor and trans would only get at best 20 mPG in a 8,000 pound truck. Thanks
Q: Can you send more photos? Some photos from start to finish? Will the car come with any original items that may have been pulled out? Answered on Jan-16-05
A: The show we shot is about the build of the car I can't put 22 minutes of fotage on the internet the original items of the Vett we don't use are the cooling system engine and trans. Everything else on the car can be left stock. From the years 1968 - 1978 those years prove to handle the diesel very well... I might put up the demo/pilotDVD on ebay as a how to if folks would like. THOUGHTS?
Q: i live in the UK i want that car soo bad i am reachable on a6ft5inguy@hotmail. com or uk 01491832803 i own a transam and uk fuel prices is killing me £4.50 a gallon so about $8 a gallon could you run your cars with fuel that exspensive please you got to help mei will pay shipping and take part maybe get some of my RAF friends involved too (like fly out in a Herc and collect it or a C17 (good for your film )) please email me with a rough price your after thanks SAC rombough a6ft5inguy@hotmail.com or call me anytime after 2pm eastern time thanks please i want this car Answered on Jan-16-05
A: If you miss out on this one we can build another in about two weeks finding a perfect donor car for +/_ $8,000 US, the motor $5,600.oo US, trans $2,100.oo US and gear Venders unit $4,200.oo US. The total for building one even after labor is close to $30,000.oo US. All parts are warrentied for up to two years.
Q: Are there any pictures of the engine compartment, interior, gassifier, closeups of care, etc. that you can post ? The three websites listed in the first question did not have any information or pictures of the Corvette. Is the car available for personal viewing and inspection ? If so, where is it located and when is it available ? Intereseted but seems too good to be true ........... Thanks. Dwayne Answered on Jan-15-05
A: The vett was allready bilt for a big block Chevy engine so the 6.5 or the duramwx are a perfit fit. We only had a gain of 80 pounds over the stock 454 engine. In a nut shell it's a stock Vett witha turbo diesel heart the Veggie Vett is a vett that sounds like a diesel and has stacks. The exhaust heat from the Veggie oil fuel is what powers the gasifier system from temps of 600 to 1200 F we get the vapors and gasses we use for further fueling the Vett. WE grind up the Veggies with an on board grinder that is on the rear deck of the car (like back to the future's Mr. Fusion) than veggie oil and grain alcahol ore mixed into the unit. So I make a Bio-Mass smoothie of sorts which is gravity feed to the gasifier system running "INSIDE" of the exhaust pipe. The exhaust heat passing across the gassifier exchanger flashes the bio-mass (HYDRO_CARBONS) into vapord and gasses we cool mix with O2 feed to the turbo. It's TV it's suposed to look to good to be true. Come drive it here in SW Missouri.
Q: I guess I don't understand this. I really would love this car but not sure besides buying it what I would have to do. please let me know. thanks erik Answered on Jan-14-05
A: We shot the OUTLAWS TV show with the Vett and it did so well we felt a documentory film was in order. Now if the car sells for the right price you can pick to be in the movie or not. If the car is sold and the new owner does'nt premit it to be used for the film we may build another one. If we get full cooperation from the new owner I share the proceeds from the work it does (the movie) up to $250,000.00. we can draw up a contract as such. THOUGHTS?
Q: Hi Can you provide a little more information on the 6.5 engine/ Its history, etcetera. Does the Gear Vendors really help in the first 3 gears or mainly for top end in high gear? Answered on Jan-13-05
A: The 6.5 we put in the Vett was naturaly asperated so the compression was higer then a stock turbo engine. I added the banks kit to get the boost pressure up, but we didn't turn up the fuel prsseure. The on board gasifier adds the extra fuel I need from that point on. The Gear Vendrs unit is AWSOME in a normal diesel trans combo we would loss almopst all are boost because of our RPM loss from gear to gear. The intake fources out boost pressure and a waste gate is just that a waste of that boost presure. The G/V unit gives me gears inbetween each of the stock four, so my gears are faster and my RPM's closer togetther. The engine is at it's best preformance and it never has to work as hard as it once did via more stable turbo preformance . I think the gear Venders is a must have if people want a diesel to preform.
Q: Hello, I am from Holland. I am interested because it's a diesel. Does the car has a clear title? Thanks, William Answered on Jan-13-05
A: Yes, The title is clear.
Q: Hey! I'm sure you've got a ton of questions about this car so I'll try to keep it short. What engine does it have? Do you have any more pctures? And did I read correctly that the winner will be "in" the tv show? Anyway cool car and I'd love to hear more about it. Answered on Jan-12-05
A: We already have shot the TV show we are realy pushing the movie ahead. The car did great for the show but it's such a cool thing we have enoff to also make a documentory film which the new Veggie Vett owner shares the spoils . I used a tricked out 6.5 GM diesel and a gearvenders under/overdrive plus lots of elbo grease. its just an outrageous claim...............like the 40+ mpg 300D

The 6.5 Turbo Diesel with the right gears and an overdrive trans will get 25-28 mpg in a truck.........there is no way its going to get 55 mpg......
