ALDA Adjustment Aftermath

I know most of you are tired of hearing about ALDA adjustments, but i cranked mine up a bit (1985 300D Turbo), and my 300D flies now. Actually drives like it has 120hp and has the low rpm oomph a diesel should have. Fun car now...gotta be a bit more careful taking turns The car gets up to 85 mph absolutely effortlessly now.

I'm not too happy about some of the side affects of this power increase though. The adjustment did reduce hard shifts. I'm guessing that's because I'm not giving as much throttle anymore to get it up to speed. The shifts are too soft however, especially 3-4. The flairing is more pronounced as well. I want to firm up the shifts and eliminate flaring...which vacuum systems should i check? My searches yielded an adjustment of the vacuum modulator on the transmission (?) but I need more detail.

That is normal side effect, when you are adding power to low rpm:s.

Try adjusting this modulator which is located in IC pump:

If I don't remmember wrong, turning it counter clockwise will make the shifts little firmer (compared to the position of gas pedal). Try it out, it won't take a long time.

If it doesn't help, you need to adjust the modulator in the gearbox, but that is a totally differend thing.

Mauri H,
Do you know of a procedure for the repair of this unit?
It is rivetted together by 3 hollow rivets. My wife's 300D was losing vacuum and having shifting issues (no vacuum). I have bypassed the unit and wish to repair it. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Tony,
Note that Mauri's photo is the IP on a 6-cylinder OM603. I may be wrong, but I don't believe that the 616 or 617 IP's have an adjustment for the transmission vacuum bleed.

Some vacuum control valves can be adjusted and some can't. You'd have to pop off the dome side cover to check. Nut with flats on a threaded shaft means it can be adjusted. Anything else is non-adjustable.

Yes, the 617 does have an adjustment. It's the white valve body on the top on the IP, and as D Delano says you must pop off the white domed cover and turn, by small increments, the 8mm flatted shaft inside.

Don't go near any of this without a vacuum gauge, you'll just chase your tail with no idea what you're doing. Ask me how I know :-)

Thanx for the reality check. A couple of years ago, when we were swapping trannys on Passion Flower, I found all kinds of stuff about adjusting the bleed but the pics looked just like the bleed in Mauri's photo. None of my cars have a bleed that looks like that so, I chalked it up to just one more bit of ambiguous information.
