Instrument pod removal tool

Just a piece of brass that cost $1.29 for a piece 24 inches long. One quarter inch wide and .065 thick. It made three.

I just took some wire about the same as a coat hanger and bent it so it could be slide behind it and twist to pull it out.

That's always my choice. Never have a problem with getting it out and no panel windows snapped off housings from being grabbed by wire, etc.

I presume you take the kick plate off to get your arm up in there? My kick plate has other stuff mounted on it which makes it even more tedious.

Tried with the hook on the W123... no luck
Tried popping it out from behind in a 420SEL... too weak?

Ended up popping it out with a screw driver levering on each side

You have to be very careful with that you may end up either popping the front of the cluster off or damaging the dash. I'd recommend if you're having difficulty to find the speedometer cable on the other side and push some through, that is the biggest thing fighting the cluster.

These were junkyard cars, the dashboards were already pretty cracked, so I thought I might as well

I guess i'll try the speedo cable later on when I have to remove it again (for needle painting).

The needle painting was quite rewarding, to this day I still marvel how much better it looks than it used to.
