Cold Start Problem

New glow plugs, very recent valve adjustment, very recent diesel purge treatment, and on synthetic.

I havent been able to start the car in about 2.5 days. I'd give it a full glow or two, then crank and crank but it wouldnt start running. I cranked to the point of hearing the starter slow down as if the battery was running out of juice. I had a AAA jumpstart and it still wouldnt run.
Just this evening i tried it again and it ran!! So i drove to the parts store and had them test my battery; O.K. The clerk also pointed out to me that if it wouldnt run even with a good jump start then it wasnt the battery.
As of now it starts and runs fine, who knows if thatll be the case in the morning.
Any ideas of what could be going on?

Might have gotten cold enough to gell the fuel. What have the temps been, was it a bit warmer when the car finally started? If so, I would bet on gelled fuel.

My brand new 1980 300D did the same thing in Atlanta once when really cold.... wouldn't crank... later in the day, no problem. It was the old gelled fuel trick!

Jelled fuel is your answer.
Add one gallon of Kerosene while filling fuel tank.
The kerosene will thin the fuel enough to prevent jelling.
When you use Kerosene to thin fuel, MPG will go down.

I will not use Kerosene above +3F…
When I use Kerosene, add one quart of power steering fluid to fuel tank for injection pump lubrication.

I thought it may be Gelling. The temps have not been as low as 3 deg. Its been between 24-32F. Would you still recommend kerosene?

WARNING!
Do not run down the battery!
I just replaced two starters because of that...

Are you 100% sure your glow plugs are good? You might have 1 bad one but light will still show you are glowing when you turn key. and winterizing your diesel fuel never hurts.

Lightbulb Read thread: Glo Plug Testing?

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=104547&highlight=glow+plugs

My 1985 300SD starts with no block heater at -6F with single glow within three revolutions of engine.

When did you last replace fuel filter?
Have you run WVO in this car?

Lightbulb Hmmm

Reading through this thread again.
Water turning to ice in fuel system could cause your symptoms.
