UnIdentified switch

There is a toggle switch in my car located on the panel that is underneath the ignition switch, right in front of where my right knee rests. I have no Idea what it is, or what it does. I flip the switch, and nothing happens. I havent traced the wires yet.

Any possible ideas on what the switch might be for?

The car is a 1983 300D.

I will post pics of it later, its too cole to go out and photograph it right now.... lol

That switch is the proximity regulator.

On slow moving vehicles with diesel engines, the driver needs a switch to activate which will dump fuel into the exhaust and make a cloud of smoke behind the vehicle. This has the beneficial effect of clearing out the tailgaters.

The switch only works when the vehicle is moving at 55 mph or above.

Damn........

..........thought I could fool the new folks for at least a day.

Welcome to the forum.

From memory, I do not think that there is a factory switch in that location. It might be an aftermarket alarm or device added by a previous owner.

But, I haven't had the 123 for over three years, so, maybe one of the other members will confirm this.

I had automatically thought it was an aftermarket switch. It doesnt seem to do anything. I might just have to get under the dash and start tracing wires when the temps start getting warmer.

Im just looking for input as for possibilities.

Thanks for the responses so far

Hmmm flashing dome eh? Perhaps that was the proxmity alert feature....flashing dome followed by activation of proximaty regulator will typically result in alert to toggle off.

I installed a switch ahead of where my left knee rests, for my electric fuel pump. The switch, pump and associated wiring are the sum total of my veg-oil "conversion". It is totally ineffective with regard to tailgaters. I have other means of dealing with them.
