post valve adjustment issues...

So, take it to local shop for valve adjustment. They said only 3 of the intake were slightly off, no exhaust. However, now, have the following new symptoms. 1) clattering/nailing more than it did prior; 2) will not downshift on a downhill, still will on the flats; 3) makes a rattle when in gear, either parked or rolling slowly. The last may be related to the muffler repair I did at the same time, having a sleeve/union welded in where the header pipe had broken at the joint with the first piece of tailpipe.

Any thoughts on the first two? My first inclination is that something was put back together differently within the throttle linkage.

thanks...

Obviously the throttle linkage on the valve cover has to be removed in order to adjust the valves. Lots of opportunity for something to get disturbed that could affect the transmission. Could be the Bowden cable or some of the vacuum components. I would check the Bowden cable adjustment first. As far as the valve rattling is concerned, the valve clearance is excessive when the engine is cold. Does it continue to rattle when the engine is at normal temperature?

Good point on the rattling. Before, it would basically go away when it got to full operating temp. I will check that.

Does the Bowden cable have a direct impact on downshifting behavior? I was reading the recent post about that the cable, but did not see any mention of downshifting. My upshifts seem very similar if not the same as before...

Yes. Adjusting the bowden cable to shift at higher RPMs (counterclockwise adjustment) will also make the transmission downshift at lighter throttle. Basically, the Bowden cable just tells the transmission how much you're pressing the accelerator, i.e., how fast you want to accelerate and the transmission shifts accordingly.

About the rattling.. Have you opened up the air cleaner and looked in there? After I did my valves the last time I left a socket inside my air cleaner and it made quite a racket when I started the car up.

Guess I need to bone up on my tool control.
