Replacing alternator on OM606 E300...

Has anyone ever done this. What is involded to release the belt tensioner. Any special tools required for any funky bolts that there may be.

I already have a torx socket set for the most common bolts on the engine at least...

Well, I can't exactly speak for your turbo'ed 606, but on my non-turbo 606 this was a very easy job. Jack up car, pull belly pan, two bolts and you're pretty much done. And yes, you have to release tension on the belt, but on a non turbo that's a 30 second job anyway.

I put a new voltage regulator/brush widget in mine.

What did you do to release the tension on the belt?

By looking at the assembly there is a long bolt that appears to hold the plastic knuckle in place maintaining tension on the spring. I assume that this bolt needs to be removed and pulled bar with some sort of breaker back to re-install the bolt?

Am I on the right track? What did you use for a breaker bar, other than a specific breaker bar itself? Rachet extension is what I'm thinkin' of...

Anything will work as long as it fits in the hole...i found a perfect sized rod...but even a screwdriver will do.

Great Success!

Replaced the alternator virtually without a sweat. Didn't have the cool torx tool for the alternator shaft to remove the pulley, just put the pulley in between two pieces of wood and compressed them in a vise. Used some Thread compound on the new bolt.

The tensioner system is AWESOME. So easy to loosen the tensioner assembly that I was in shock.
