Question Normal Coolant Temp ???

I recently replaced my thermostat, prior to the change my engine would NEVER reach 80* C. It would barely move off 40*C. Now that I have changed it seems to run about 90* C. The old thermostat was not stuck open??? I can't figure it.
After the replacement I let the engine reach 90* then loosened radiator cap and drove up a steep hill. Parked and put heat on max. I hope this burped the system. My thermostat is rated at 80* C. My thoughts are that at 80* it should open and run in the 80* range. 90* seems to be a bit high.

Thanx in advance.....

Thermostats don't need to be stuck open to run too cool. As the spring wears it loses tension, allowing the thermostat to open at lower temperatures. Mine was only letting the car get up to about 50 degrees when I got the car in May '03; It was also made in West Germany, which gives some indication of how old it was.
As for running around 90 degrees, mine also does that. It doesn't worry me though, because:
1. That's not hot enough to hurt the engine.
2. The temperature guage probably isn't very accurate anyway. These old temp guages are only good for giving a general idea of what the coolant temperature is.
As long as it doesn't go past 95 or so, I wouldn't worry.

Thumbs up Ocd

Thanx for the reply. I realize it is a safe temp, but the OCD kicks in and makes me wonder how accurate the gauge is, and of all the horrible things that could happen....

On a side note, last weekend I had to pull the gauge cluster, while in there there are two sets of grounds that are bolted to the dash steel framing. I pulled the bolts cleaned everything up and my temp gauge does not go up to 100 as it did previously. One month before, I replaced the thermostat, which did nothing for the temp.
Maybe if you clean up those grounds, you may have more accurate gauges.
By the way.. all older german cars I have owned seem to have mysterious grounding issues as they age, seems that cleaning up your grounds should be a maintenece item along with all the regular stuff.

good luck

90c is fine for an 80c rated thermostat, my OM616 turbo comes with a 72c rated thermostat which keeps my gauge at around 80c steady at up to 35c outside weather and goes up to 90c during 40-45c weather and the max it has hit is 95c in the 55c weather in Rajasthan.
