POS won't shift out of low

It's a 79 300SD. I just put another transmission (used) in it. It worked fine the first few times I tried it. Now, it won't shift out of low. I checked the vacuum at the modulator on the transmission. With the car idling, it has 16 inches at the modulator; 19 inches going into the vacuum thingy on top of the injector pump.

Can anyone tell me why I do this? I can think of several forms of self-mutilation that would be more fun.

If it has a nice interior and its rust free I'll give you $100 for it and save you the torture....

if you won't do that check the rod that goes up to the throttle linkage......

make sure it hasn't popped off and wedged somehow. I am assuming the floor shifter works correctly.

Kickdown switch stuck?

I'll add the suggestion to check the kickdown switch and wiring to the transmission.

Best Regards,
Jim

I'll second the kick-down switch. Disconnect it.

It could also be the bowden cable. If it's too tight, the tranny will shift real high (>3500 rpm)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.... I checked the rod to the accelerator linkage and it seems right. I'll disconnect the kick-down switch today.

boner: I'm considering your offer... do you think you might want to drive it from Utah to Virginia in low gear? BTW, I have a blue 79 300SD that I am junking out... is there anything you need?

Well, if I found one with a nice body, I'd consider buying it. Oh no, I told my parents I'd sell the SD when I got the SDL....whoops. Actually, my mom mentioned buying it from me because she likes it a lot. So, if I got this one I could put my engine and tranny in... let me know if he doesn't go through with it.
Thanks
David
