Thumbs up Can it be?! My Sunroof WORKS!!!

Yes it's true all, my roof does in fact work! I was quite excited today after I manually opened it to inspect the tracks and whatnot to see what the deal was.

In the end, it turns out my switch on the dash is heavily soiled to make the unit open... but to close it, the switch works fine.

There is no binding/dragging either with it. But since I have some MB Slide Paste on the way... I'm going to grease it up anyway.

I had to share my new found joy with you guys.

Now I am seriously interested in how you got that thing open manually.
My motor spins, switch works, resistance at the clutch (cable still intact, I think), and I can't get the damn thing to budge.
It aint glued either, I have run all the way around it.
Does this mean ruining the headliner to get at the innards?

Pop your trunk. On the left side by the power antenna there's a lil thing about 2x4.5" or so. It's a plug.

Inside there is a red (on mine at least) nut. Counter-clockwise allows you to crank it open. I think it was a 21mm or 13/16" may suffice. It's a rather simple operation!

It's there to manually close in an emergency situation.

Oh, ya got me. I'm still trying to get my last window to operate... the motor is fully functional and the switch is fine. I think I have a problem in the part the switch plugs into... tomorrow I shall see.

Good luck with your roof!

If you can, have someone work the control from the back and get someone up on top to "smack" the roof with their hand and get it to pop down (assuming you have a pop down and hide inside the roof sunroof).

Don't hit it hard in the middle...but get the sides and try to break it loose.
I open/close mine ALL the TIME to keep these problems from happening. And sometimes its fun to see the starts at night around the edges of my fedora (hat).

Hmmmm......

My sunroof used to work. Now it appears as if a "latch" on one side will not release. I am not that familiar with the mechanism, and its operation,to mess with it yet. I was hoping to learn a little more before I had to do something a drastic as removing part of the headliner.

Sunroofs !!!!

I have or had three MBs with sunroofs. A 79 380 SLC euro, an 88 300 SE and an 88 560 SEC. None of which work or worked properly. These are like MB climate control systems, not MB's "finest hour". That said, is there such a thing as a 560 SEC that has the non-slide-into-the-roof type of sun roof ?. I can not tell if this one does or not. The bar that the moving roof attaches to is disattached. It moves around in the roof but does nothing to or for the sunroof!!!. Thanks Lee

I have a similar problem with the sunroof in my 88 300 SE. I tried to use the hand crank and carefully move it back into the roof and the latch or guide snapped off and jammed in the slide mechanism. Now, of course, the sunroof cannot be used. I think I will have to remove the headliner to get at the problem.
Can the sliding roof be removed without taking out the headliner, that is by pushing it up from inside the car and undoing or unscrewing something so it can be removed?? Does anyone know?? Thanks Lee
