bad weather, no traction, 240's rule!!!
check www.weather.com. its gonna get snowy here. tonite, because there was no dinner ready, and cuz the weather is bad, i decided that we needed to go to our favorite mexican place 15 miles down the road. the slow acceleration of the mighty 240d was a winner. the road hugging, power sapping weight, keep the car centered on the road and traveling straight when the fwd crowd is cowed.
on the way home 32 is a little worse. no tracks in the road that even the yellow fogs(thanks walt) could detect but the car kept going. passing the meek as they cowered in the right lane at 15mph, with hazard flashing, "don't hit me!! i am afraid." only two folks worried us. the fwd daimler(chrysler is silent) that suddenly dove for the right lane and the next street with no regard for the car on the right. yes i was passing on the right but there was no other lane. the second was the chevy p-u 2wd that pulled thru the stopsign and fishtailed up the street. we watched the snow flying off the knobby tires as the dope tried to get go fast. we passed him at the light as he waited behind the grand am to turn left. he tried to catch us but the p-u did not have the heart of red. the 22 yr old 3500 pound, under powered(and thats a good thing on nites like tonite) german lead sled conquerred all tonite. 240d's of the world arise and take your place amongst the mighty.

High horsepower/low weight cars are the worst in snow......witness the honda in my sig. 200HP, 2,100 lb weight is NOT conducive to driving in snow.
The total opposite of a 240D

I've always had good luck with the 300CD in the snow, since I've only had it stuck a few times, and it always stops excellent on ice. All I am running are some all season radials, and 2 sand bags in the trunk. Since the n/a cars are under powered as the Doc has said, they do excellent in the snow.
My AWD Subaru is another story, it does excellent in the snow, as long as I keep my foot off the gas and don't let the turbo spool up to much, otherwise I have some problems, but it is always fun to play rally driver in the snow |

Many years ago had the use of a '57 oval window bug in old home town Cincy. Lots and lots of steep hills. It was standard practice to start off in 3rd gear when in deep snow or on ice, as even that under-powered car was too lite for the torque it put out in 1st or 2nd. Found the same to be true on the Model A that was my next daily driver. On that one, starting in 2nd or 3rd was mandatory in the conditions you were experiencing. This is why 300D Turbos would all be better off with Manual Trannies in them!!! At least we could choose what gear to use under all conditions.

That blizzard is headed our way right now It proclaims 7-10" of snow tonight, and I have to leave for work at 8am....that will be interesting, I get to conquer the freshly snowed roads! I've never had a problem in the snow with my SD, I have never gotten stuck, even doing dumb things like parking off the side of the road on an incline in snow about 14" deep.....yes it took much "digging" by use of the pedal....but it always gets out I use the goodyear assurance tires, which are dramatically better than the Futura's I used to have, I also have excellent braking in the snow and ice, its very controlable.

Got about a foot now on the alley and driveway. Came home with the wife from dinner and with a steady foot and blizzaks on the back, made it right up the drive way no sweat. The neighbor was brushing off his Suburban and his jaw was dropped. Snow tires are great, and having little power on the low-end is even better.......
ABS light came on though on the drive home.... :/ -m
