Clock removal 84 300SD

I am going to try to replace the capacitors in the clock. I have the instrument panel out of the dash and have taken the panel apart. There is one little thing keeping me from completely removing the clock from the housing. It is a gold ring type fastener on the back of the clock panel. If I am successful at posting a picture, the fastener is at 4 o'clock. Does anyone know how to remove this fastener?

Does it actually have to be removed or is that just a sort of slip in join for a male pin on the back of the clock setup. I didnt seem to have one of these on my 300SD (81) so I am not too sure...is it physically holding the unit together?

Brandon,

It "seems" to be holding the clock assembly in the housing. I am a little concerned about just starting to pry around on something this delicate looking. Thanks for the reply. Any other thoughts?

Tom

I've got the identical clock in my hand and I believe that that brass colored washer is what grounds the clock. I don't have the housing (did the job a couple of years ago) but, the location of the brass washer is right on top of a pin on the back of the clock.

I believe that you can be confident of carefully lifting this brass washer to free it from the pin. Be careful, however, as the pin is very thin and the base of the pin is soldered to the board.

In my 82 SD it was soldered in place, I warmed it with the iron and it popped right out.....

Yes, I believe that the '84 is likely the same.

After thinking about it, I'm sure that there must be a touch of solder in there to ensure an electrical path to the case. There seems to be a touch of solder on the pin on the clock that I have in my hand, as well.

I'd touch it with some heat and the clock should pull away from the brass plate on the back panel.

It wouldn't budge until I put the solder gun on it. Sorry, I should have clarified that procedure. Life is good, my clock works.
