A little compassion please

It is unkind to poke hoo-rah at your fellow forum members just because we don't have the lovely winter weather that you enjoy.

Some of us are winter weather challenged. No snow. No ice or salt (except in our drinks). No gelled fuel. No chance of frostbite. No snow tires or tire chains. No ice scrapers. No multiple glow plug cycles before starting. No winter coats. No snowball fights. No dogs frozen in mid-squirt at the fire hydrant.

Pity us. Send donations.

And just what is this block heater thingy I have heard so much aboot?

Jockeying cars around each night now so that I can find 4 plugs. Digging them out of snowbanks and letting them run all night at college.....sigh....perhaps another month and the sun will re-appear.

My car starts repeatedly at 0F without plug in. This weekend we got 18" of nice snow. My toughest decision was what music to listen to in my old truck while I plowed. I chose "Four Seasons" by Vivaldi - so appropriate. Then the whole family (6 of us) went cross-country skiing behind our house. 1000 acres back there. Not only am I truly blessed, but I'm aware of the fact. I have all I need and more.

Here it's not getting into the 70's until tomorrow. But, we'll pay for this mild winter weather once summer rolls around. Southern Louisiana is basically a naturally-occuring sauna. I do whatever maintenance I know I'll need in the wintertime, because in the summer all I can handle is oil changes and cutting the grass. One day I'll have a garage...

Diesel and kerosene in the heater are okay, leave the gas cars outside..

Thats one advantage of Diesel! You can take the car apart in your cozy garage with the kerosene heater at high toasty flame and not worry about a flash explosion. I never work on the gassers in the garage during the winter. When the wind is howling outside and there is nowhere to go anyway, thats the time to do those lengthy overhauls in the kerosene heat of your garage. Only one problem-- I jacked the car up on all Fours and left the snowblower in the back of the garage this year, so I had to shovel by hand a two car driveway some forty feet long...
