V6 Cdi

The Detroit Auto Sheow ended Sunday. The attached picture was taken at the Mercedes booth which displayed the new V6 CDI (which was made public before Christmas in Munich). The rumor mill says that will be launched in March in Germany as C320 CDI, then E320 CDI, and next year, 2006, in the US as M320 CDI.

this is different from the original 320CDI, which was an inline-6. I wonder why they go through all that trouble ...

It much smaller than inline. It will fit the w211 body, the c, s and m class having 4 wheel drive as well. Inline 6 is a larger engine - doesn't allow 4matic.

The 2.2 four, 2.7 five and 3.2 six are all from the same family, just with cylinders cut off. I guess this saves costs on development and production as they are 75% the same.

However the in-line six did not fit in the C-class and ML, so now they have a separate V6 instead.

Now that diesels are more popular, they can probably afford to engineer separate V6s to the four cylinders.

Anyone have power and torque figures for these engines? Do they have less in lesser models: this is something I have noticed in Audi and BMW. the 730d has loads of torque, but the 330d some 60-70 lb/ft less IIRC but with the same power. It's disappointing as it has not that much extra over a 320d.

Same with Audi's V6 TDI, it feels very lacking in torque next to their 1.9 and 2.0 TDI units, and in torque/litre of engine capacity ratio they are lacking, at least in the A4 and A6.

Well, the new V6 CDI will have:

221 DIN(I think) bhp @ 3800 rpm
376 lb/ft @ 2800 rpm.

Almost the same hp as the gas V6 M112 being produced right now. A smidgen more torque available than the previous version with a better spread earlier on.

I think maximum engine speed is lower, though.

Well, the V6 C320 CDI over in Europe seems to accelerate about as quickly as the E320CDI here over in the states.

one engine that goes against the modular engine architecture is the 400CDI, which has a 75-degree V8 design.

check this out: http://www.gdtm.ru/MBimages/400CDI.htm

Wow! I wonder if they would let you buy it "one piece at a time"? (Johnny Cash I believe)

mbcanada.com

There is a good article on mbcanada.com about the V6. It is listed under, Breaking news and then under pinned- New V6 diesel engine by Mercedes-Benz. You have to register to view article. If you get a chance view their comedy page and look at the "Ten top reasons You know you are a Redneck" page.

I hope this V6 is better than the Audi 3.0L V6 TDI. It's gotten VERY bad reviews as having very poor torque output and BIG $$$ to maintain.

The C320 CDI was first driven in Wednesday's Autocar magazine.

It has 221bhp.

The 6-speed manual has only 306 lb. ft. of torque.. a good amount but not loads more than the 220 CDI so it wouldn't feel a huge amount faster than it.

It looks like another sad case of the large diesel being torque limited when installed in the smaller models...

However specify the auto (7G-Tronic I believe) and you get a full 376 lb ft, about as much as a new M5 and a little more than the BMW or Audi 3.0 units when installed in their biggest cars. This must be a real bruiser.

The 330d makes only 287 lb ft in the first generation, and later models 306 lb ft. The 330cd (coupe) makes a full 369 lb ft though - a nice touch fitting the sportier coupe with a higher tuned version, but maybe mean not to offer it in the saloon too.
