'85 300D for $1000

There's a darn good chance I'm going to by this car this weekend.....It needs some sorting and willl kick me along the learning curve but from the research and reading here I think it is worth a shot....My scheme would be to drive the car home and start to work on it in the Spring....Thanks and I hope to be able to introduce myself as an owner soon....

How many miles? What isn't working on it? Details, details, we like details

It may turn out that you got a really nice deal for a Grand.

If it runs and drives it is a good deal.

My wife and I have been scratching our chin on this one. We figure for $1000 its not too big a risk (will these words return to haunt me?) for a project car.

160k
Orig. owner
won't shut off with key, door locks I believe don't work
minimal rust
tranny shifting issues (main concern for me is massive thunk when tranny drops to 1st or neutral on coasting to a stop....)
seems to start cold (tomorrow AM should be a good test as its been cold around here)
no rust at lights/wheel wells/trunk interior
slight rust at jack points
coolant appears to be clean
has becker radio - is that good or bad?
AC doesn't work - uninstalled new compressor comes with deal
sunroof works - dang the sunroofs on these cars are enormous!
ball joints reportedly need replacement.
interior appears to be worn in accordance with age/mileage but not damaged

we'll see - wish me luck - hopefully I'll become an owner
Rob M Concord, MA

My wifes only concern is that I won't be able to keep my hands off unitl I finish some things higher on "the list" (She's no dummy this one)

don't you dare that's my car you son-of-a-biscuit-eater

cheap at twice the price, will last and last, fix the rust first and fix it permanently, the vac issues are a piece of cake, I'd jump on it if I were you

these cars clean up nice, I'm jealous

Ah, the proverbial "list" of Honey-do's.
You had best not lollygag on this one. I paid $500 more for mine and is not near the shape as this one.
The tranny, shut down & door locks should be a vacuum leak or new kit for the vacuum pump.
And from where you live, there will be many months to sort out the air cond. (I ran mine last week).
It sounds like, from your wife's response, that you have already fallen in love with the car. (As you know, they can sense these things. ) Careful, she will probably fall in love with it and end up driving it all the time.

Vacuum issues should be easy to fix. Do the brakes have power assist? If they do it's probably not the pump.

Sounds like a good buy I'd jump on it.

Check the D.I.Y. section here for lots of info and tutorials.

Good luck

For $1000.00 and if you enjoy working on cars. Go for it! You'll pump consideralbly more into it after you get through doing all the repairs, but you'll feel a close bond with your "Newesd Car".

I have a 300 D w/ vaccuum leaks in the doors, what's the best way to replace this? As to where to get the hosing, I know how to take the door panels off. I just need to know about the hoses and what else to replace.

Heck for $1k if it starts tomarrow how can you go wrong? Don't worry about the rust unless it is major. Next spring grind the heck out of it and treat it, problem solved. All of the other issues are not a big deal, vac problems are alwasy present with these cars.

Tranny clunk could be a worn mount, a flex disc you would feel when you are driving. Also flex discs don't give to much warning they seem to fail fast.

Sunroof is normal, I need to get mine back together. They are a royal pita to work on.

AC is normal, these cars all seem to need AC work.

Play up some little problem maybe you could get it for $800! Drive a hard bargin.
