Diesel Bug (fungus)

Found this information when I was searching for a store to buy Biobor and thought I would share it.

It came from right here: http://www.silmid.com/biobor/fuelbiocide.htm

What is 'Diesel Bug'

Diesel bug is not a single species of microbe. It can comprise a collection of bacteria, yeasts and moulds. It can exist even in fuel that is quite clean, but at low levels. If it does not enjoy suitable conditions to enable it to flourish, there is little to worry about, as minor contamination will be filtered out as the fuel is drawn through to the engine.

'Suitable conditions' essentially means the presence of water, because the microbes live and multiply on a fuel/water interface. They live and reproduce in the water, but feed on the nutrients in the fuel. Given the presence of water, warm or humid conditions will also help them to propagate. The number of bugs required to pose a problem is many millions, so the level of contamination is measured as a logarithmic power in colony-forming units (CFUs). 'Clean' fuel will have a rating of up to a few thousand (2x103cfu/lt), light contamination which is enough to cause a problem is up to a couple of million (2x106cfu/lt), while heavy contamination will be up in the tens of millions (1x107cfu/lt).

Motor Boats Monthly "Best Value" Product - Biobor JF

Used widely in industry, this product has a good reputation for getting the job done, albeit slowly. Our own tests backed this up, with little obvious immediate effect but good results over the longer term. However, it kills off the bug only in the fuel but not in the water, making recontamination likely if you don't keep up the preventative dosage. It comes in a handy-sized bottle with an integral measure.

Shock treatment 20ml per 100lt.
Preventative dose 10ml per 100lt.
Price £8.48 for 235ml (treats 530gal).
Preventative dose cost per 100lt of fuel £0.36.

Hehe...suitable conditions. Before Christmas, I managed to dump a load of water-laden WVO in my lovely bride's car. The cladosporium resinae (diesel fungus) had a field day and at one point we were barely getting 60 miles from a prefilter. I bought them by the gross...I doubled the BioBor recommended shock treatment dose on two tanks of diesel and then went to a maintenance dose after that...I haven't gone back to burning WVO yet. I have to build a 'dewatering' device first.

Kevin,
FWIW, here in Austin you can buy BioBor JF at West Marine...they're at 183 and Burnet in the strip mall on the SW corner.

K,
You give me waaay too much credit. But, SWMBO definitely deserves a kudo: while in the midst of "alternate fuel hell" I told her that I appreciated her patience and understanding on the fuel problems. She said that when she decided to drive the old car and then again when she went along with the WVO project she had known there would be times when there would be problems. You see, she is a whole lot smarter than I am.

I use BioGuard, which you can get at any West Marine / Boat U.S. store. It not only kills critters, but renders them soluble enough to be burned. Their maintenance dose is 1/2 oz. at every fillup, which I do. I've never had even the slightest problem, and it's cost is only ~$15 / 16oz, or ~£7.95 / 537ml, or £0.25 per fillup.

I've noticed when looking for biocides online that shipping usually seems outragoues (one place was $20 shipping on a $12 order). I guess that biocides require hazardous material shipping. Anyway, found the Bioguard you mentioned (along with a few others) at Outdoor Superstore for $13.71 and only $6 shipping.

R,

You're just too humble to admit that you provide a LOT of help to a LOT of people around here. That's ok...I'll give ya props...just like I'll give Greg and the others props.

I picked it up this weekend and did a double shock treatment...so far so good.

I asked the guy to look into stocking Diesel Purge...told him I knew of at least 25 local diesel owners that would sing his praises online if he would....hmmm....probably has to be a home office decision, but....who knows!

Thanks for all the help you give me and everyone else. (Greg does his via PM....)

Leo,

I'm not sure what forums you follow, but you may want to check out this biodiese.infopop.cc thread about using swimming pool flocculants to remove particles and water from WVO. Its experimental, but very interesting, and may be cheaper than the 'heat and let settle' or 'boil it off' methods.

peace,
sam

The fungus clogs up the primary(clear w/hose barbs) fuel filter with black crud and causes power loss or engine shutdown.
