Turbo + Supercharger?

I sure hope he plans on running a Intercooler...a very efficent one..

I presume the s/c for below boost power and the turbo for additional goodies...

I want to see the rest of this project :)

OMG! Just when you thought the Finns had done it all, they pull out yet another cool toy from their bag o' tricks. Wow, a turbo/supercharged OM617...not in my wildest dreams.

boneheaddoctor 01-31-2005 08:12 AM

Those Finns never fail to amaze me with what they are able to do..............

BoostnBenz 01-31-2005 10:14 AM

With enough money anything is possible.

engatwork 01-31-2005 10:27 AM

How is he supposed to get to his block drain plug? First 123 I've seen with anti-lock brakes. I would rather have that modification:).

Amazing amount of work and creativity. But I cannot help wondering with all this progress would have been better placed to upgrading the suspension, improving engine components, filtration and so on. If you need speed the 617 is the wrong car for you....just my humble two cents.

These wacky Finns are my heros!

It takes imagination too.

Actually, I believe that modding a 617 is a worthwhile undertaking; exploring the 617's power envelope is something long overdue. It will be interesting to find out what they're also doing to the IP...who knows, down the road there may be access to some modified torque plates for that unit. :) :) :)

BoostnBenz 01-31-2005 12:33 PM

Being the car is european it is probably factory ABS for them, I wonder why we never got a chance to get ABS on our US cars.

Well with enough money you can hire someone with an imagination, if that were lacking. ;)

I wasn't aware the bosch IP is riding on a torque plate, there are some with the bosch P-7100 (CTDs) that grind their own plate. :)

I hate to be a pessimist but if we've gone 23 years without any mods I highly doubt any will surface soon. It just seems like the hassle to BOMB the motor is a bit much. I'll turn the ALDA up more, I already got a better intake, and I'll soon up the boost but anything more than that isn't worth the hassle IMO.

What's with all of the rust

BoostnBenz 01-31-2005 12:45 PM

Seems like that area has a test on used cars we don't use here. It is called the stomp test, if you can stomp on the floor without your feet going through it is a good car. Salt.... :headshot:

H2O2 01-31-2005 01:15 PM

No doubt he's installed larger pump elements to increase the fuel quantity, turned up the full load limit screw, and upped the governed speed to somewhere north of 5500 rpms. That should return some heady hp/torque figures. Curious to find out what sort of boost pressures he'll be running with the dual configuration. The blower should help to eliminate the lag found in the other Super Turbo setups.

Is there any consensus of how much torque an auto can hold? I know this guy is using a 4 spd manual but next to nobody has those here in a turbo diesel. :(

boneheaddoctor 01-31-2005 01:26 PM

You HAVE to respect the workmanship that has gone into this.....I know I do.

I was commenting here about how the V-8 was hooked up to our transmission (different clutch packs probably but similar). This will give you an idea of what it could hold up to. Also I believe Mauri was mentioning that if the transmission was gone through and the proper parts were added (packs, etc)...the transmission could easily outperform the stickshift. I believer there was also som e issue with the stickshift not being able to hold up to the torque, etc.
