Sudden heat loss

Driving my '87 300SDL tonight, and suddenly the very good heat stopped and lukewarm air was blowing out.An archive search wasn't helpful. The cool air continues. I'm ignorant mechanically.Could I get some helpful hints or suggestions,so I can bring this to the mechanic and have some idea what I'm talking about? Thanks for any help!

what has happened is contagious........

You see, once one of these SDL's gets a problem, the problem is contagious.

This SDL, last Thursday, decided that I do not need to have any heat on the highway, despite the fact that it was 15°F. No amount of pleading with it changed its opinion. So, I had to drive it 200 miles that way. Of course, later in the evening, the temp. dropped to 8°F. Not much fun when your fingers are getting frostbitten inside the vehicle.

So, since I did not fix the SDL yet, it had the ability to transmit this "freeze the driver" disease to your SDL and now it suffers from the same thing.

It is vitally important that you fix yours as fast as possible so that it does not pass the disease along to Hattie's SDL. He already has enough to fix and he does not need to be working on his heat.

What you must do is to take the monovalve apart and confirm that the diaphragm is broken. Then, you need a monovalve repair kit. I'm in the process of trying to get a couple on e-bay, since they have recently become quite pricey.

If you are not sure about where the monovalve is and what to do with it, post again and I'll point you over there.

Anytime Dave.

Help is what we do here.

Oh, and BTW, drain about three quarts of coolant from your radiator prior to opening up the monovalve. Save the coolant and return it to the tank when you are done. You'll be happy you did this.
