clunking noise from back half of car...what is it?

when i drive my car, as i'm rolling along i hear a rumbling/clunking from the back of the car...it sounds kind of like something is loose and jiggling around and hitting up against something else in rapid succession. what could it be?

Have you checked your trunk for small animals ?
Could be CV joints or wheel bearings or bearings or ujoints in the driveshaft...

While it is the sway bar links on your car, on mine the entire rear window thumps and bangs in the body.

I really need new rubber.

How did you guys settle on sway bar mounts when he did not mention the noise being associated with bumps in the road ?... A CV joint can make those types of noise on level smooth ground.... have never seen a sway bar do that.

it could also be rear subframe mounting bushings. they will make a very loud clunk/bang, when shifting, will also make it seem to shift hard. new repair kits can be had for between $110-$140 each.
