My guess is that he is referring to the engine. I mean, while not all of them suffer from the awesome bend, there's no guarantee that the one you have won't suffer from it, unless the car's engine has already been replaced with a brand new one from the factory which has the flaw removed from its design.

Thumbs down

Its not only the engine (which is a big factor nontheless). Have you read the mileage? If that mileage is acurate, and the description of the car is accurate, look at the seats and the arm rest. I was an Insurance appraiser before, and a tall-tale of an abused car and high-mileaged car are abnormal and excessive wear on the drivers seat. If that car was garaged kept as they alleged, and the car only has 80 some odd thousand miles, why are the plastic bezels around the headlamps yellowed and the seats so worn? Something does not sound right. Moreover, at that price, those seats must be in absolute immacualte condition for me to even consider it. Not to mention there are no pics of the engine bay or the trunk. I just dont know.

I agree.

The mileage cannot be accurate with seats looking like that. But, headlight bezels will yellow with age in the sun, so that's probably not a good indicator.

Robert's right something is going on in this auction. Tightly cropped photos like those in this auction also make me nervous. It would be interesting to see what the Carfax says.

Damn....that could not have been listed very long...this is the first I saw it and have been combing the diesels on Ebay the last week. Its close to me but I have to fix a friends computer tonight after work and can't check it out.

But I would give the 3.5 diesel a wide berth after all I have heard about them.

Yeah something doesn't smell right. It was probably an around town car used for a lot of short trips, the drivers seat would probably wear more. I would have to look at it, but they are asking to much.

The 350SD is a rare car I think 2,700 give or take were made.

The mileage could be very accurate because a car driven only on short trips around town can have seat wear like those in the pics. My 300SD was used mainly around town all 20 years of its life (well, before I got it) and the armrest was worn when I got it. The seat cushion wasn't very much worn because the PO wasn't a heavy set individual. In the case of that 350SD, if the car was driven mostly around town and the driver's a heavy person, the seat/armrest can and will wear as shown in the pictures.

The 350SD/SDL is only rare because people weren't buying them. Gas prices had come down greatly and M-B had the 300SE/SEL which wasn't a gas guzzler like the V8 126s. Given that, the popularity of the diesels went down sharply around the time when the 350SD/SDL was produced. I've heard that the engine is very sweet in power delivery and refinement when everything works right, but given the problems people have had with it and its rods, I'd stay away from it.

Yeah the 350 SD's were rare for a reason, people obviously preferred the SEL versions.

That being said, am I the only one who notices the fact most crop the wear out of the front seats or a damaged bumper...etc...its crazy, but I see it ALL the time.

I suspect the seat look so poor because this car was subject to lots of in-town, getting in and out driving, notice all the bumpers have wear and rub marks on the sides, probably a good thing the owner didn't have an SEL's extra length.

Brian I agree with you. I smell a rat! I dont care how many short trips you take, MB leather is, in my opinion, one of the better quality hides. It takes alot of abuse for MB leather to age and tear like that. If this car, again like it states, was driven by a doctor, there should be not that much wear. As far as the yellowing is concerned, I agree that the sun does that, but the description states that the car was garaged all its life. I dont know up north, but down here in Florida, Doctors usually have a very good parking space and a roof over their cars in case it rains (that is, if it is not garged at the office too).

The console wood looks as damaged as the seats. I might almost wonder about extreme sun and/or water damage here.

And the artsy-angle photos are annoying.

Here's another one with oddly-concealing pictures. I won't denigrate the car's shape because, heck, I can't tell what shape the car's in from the description or the photos, except that it won't start, and despite several inquiries from interested people, the guy won't provide more pictures or info...
