Valve Adjustment Question

I was adjusting the valves on my 300SD. I couldn't get the feeler gauges between any of the cam lobes and adjustment nut, so I think it was just about time I did it.
My question is.. is there an easier way for cylinder number 5 close to the firewall. All the other ones seemed to really easy to get to with two 14 mm wrenches. I was thinking a crowfoot or something like that?

Thanks
-Christoph

The feeler gauge should be inserted between the cam lobe and the rocker arm, not between the rocker arm and valve adjusting nut.

That rear cylinder is hard to get to... have you read the threads about the ' bent wrenches' ? One thing you can do is put the four cylinder into your car.. that extra space is at the firewall where it does the most good... it is also easy to reach that last cylinder if you put the engine on a engine stand.
I suggest you find at least the Haynes shop manual for this engine.. before you some mistakes which cost you a LOT of money...

thanks for the replies. yeah i actually put the feeler gauges between the lobe and the rocker arm. I was just confused on the terminology. I bought a new wrench so i could heat and bend my old one. Hopefully I'll get it together now.

I made a set of "bent" 14mm wrenches. The handles are 3/8 black iron pipe and on one of the wrenches I cut the handle off so its about only 3" long. This fits in and does #5 just fine. A 5/16 bolt (with the head cut off) fits into the handle when i need more torque. It works very well when you have things loosened up and are going for that "sweet spot".

Leather,
Have you considered taking the engine out to do the valve adjustments?

Wow, almost sounds like there's a market for someone to sell specially designed "bent" wrenches to do valve adjustments

Wonder why they never thought of that?

Kevin

Me too... seems like an awful lot of trouble to make your own -- you have to be pretty hardcore (in my opinion) to make your own tools so you can make your own repairs
