Strange dash warnings/messages
Last night I had my fault codes read using the 38 pin connector under the hood, not the connector under the dash. I found it pretty interesting that my OBDII unit that connects under the dash would not test and read about 90% of the systems that the under the hood connector could.
Anyway, my car was running when the codes were read and when we were finished, I just drove off. I add this information because I'm not sure if what happened with my dash indicators was a function of this or not. I had two odd messages/warnings show up on my instrument cluster display. 1. Two small overlapping squares appeared just to the right of the odometer reading. I went through my owner's manual, but could find no indication of what they meant. I seem to recall seeing them once before, but don't recall what they mean. 2. When I turned the car off, the letters BAS appeared nice and big right where the odometer reading usually is. Both of the above indicators disappeared when I restarted the car and they never came back on. There was no indication of any problems with the operation or drivability of the car during any of this. Anyone with information on what these indicators mean? Thanks. Len '99 E300TD 73,000 miles |

Len -
The two small squares are seen when the display has an error message to show, but the reset (R) button has been pushed to clear the message and display the odometer. They're something of a reminder that an error message is hidden back there somewhere. BAS is brake assist. Not sure why you would see that message. The early BAS cars (not sure if a '99 qualifies) had a fault where pushing both the brake and throttle pedals simultaneously caused a BAS fault. But in that case it lit both the BAS/ASR light (to the left of the display) and also showed a BAS error. There was a service campaign and/or recall for that problem. I had it after letting my two-foot-driving-klutz-of-an-inlaw-swears-he-doesn't-push-both-pedals-at-the-same-time drive my '98 E300. My recommendation: forget about the messages unless they reappear. Quite likely triggered by reading the diagnostics. - JimY |

Thanks for the reply guys. Is there an affordable OBDII unit for home use that will read all of the codes from the 38 pin conector under the hood? I'm really missing out on a lot by just usinf=g the connector under the dash.
The brake assist mesasge never came back on so I'll also assume that it was an anomaly caused by the connection of the code reader. The one code that did come up was P0180, fuel temperature sensor. Any ideas what the porblem/fix for that is? I pulled and cleaned what I think is the sensor. It's on the injeciton pump at about glowplug #1. Len |
