Oil in the air filter

I am wondering how I can stop oil from getting inside the air firlter housing. I feel like my car could be running much better with a clean air filter but i am reluctant to replace because every time id o its gets oil all over. How can I stop this on my 82 300 sd.

It's oily crank case vapors from the vent on the valve cover, unavoidable on a high mileage engine. Unless you are willing to replace the entire filter assembly with one which seperates the oil recovery from the air filter, I think you're stuck with it.

You could build a better catch can to catch more of the oil, out of some common materials.

Just google "catch can" or "homemade catch can"

A better than stock one would keep more of the excess oil out of your engine, without plugging the crankcase oil venting system.

Just a thought..
