brand new blower motor; fuse still melts

I just put a brand new blower motor in, and cleaned the contacts for the #8 fuse with that $10 crap from radio shack...the fuse still melts (not blows) just like before. I read a post on here where someone had the exact same problem as me; they asked about doing the whole external fuse kit thing. someone replied saying not to do that since that kit was designed for 124's and 126's only. my question is, would installing an external 30 amp fuse holder/fuse solve my problem?

I installed the 30 amp external fuse in the W123 (1983) when I had it. It worked fine. I never did understand how the blower and the a/c could be on the same fuse. The fuse would last about two months and then it would become about 1/8" too short due to compression of the plastic.

I wonder if the problem could be eliminated if you could locate a proper ceramic fuse. The conductor never did melt. The plastic is what couldn't take the heat.

The aux fuse works just fine on a 123. I installed it on an '83 four years ago and the blower motor has worked perfectly since.

My ACC unit is bypassed, and I have toggle switches for compressor and fan, but on advice from folks here I put a 30 amp fuse (larger kind) on my fan and it worked fine all summer. It had a 20 amp fuse before, and it melted a leg loose!

When I did the 123, I did it the hard way. Crawl under the dash and work with one eye and one arm. Remove one screw, very carefully, like you were working on a bomb, and insert eyelet from new fuse holder (all with one arm and hand). Install screw back into fuse panel.

Then do the same thing with the second eyelet and the second screw.

It's a brutal process. But, the fuse is now bypassed.

However, I have since come to understand that the fuse panel is removable, somehow, from underneath the hood!! If this is really true, then the installation of the aux. fuse would be very simple. I'm not sure how it can pull out of the cowl, however.

On the underside of the fuse panel are screws that secure the wires to the terminal ends that go to the fuses.

The two screws for the fuse that controls the blower must be removed so that you can install the eyelets on the new cable.

Once the eyelets are installed, you simply remove the original fuse and all current goes through the new cable and 30A fuse.
