The ALDA on Marlene ('83 300TD) is completely backed-out...all the way against the stop. There is no excessive smoke on acceleration, only a light haze and no change in the boost at full chat; still only about 9.5PSI. However, I do notice that the turbo spools much sooner now; I easily get 5+ PSI by 1200 RPM and the boost is present for a longer duration after closing the throttle (I have had a pressure gauge in the cabin for about 20,000 miles so I have a sense of what the engine usually does). The improvement in off-idle perfromance after the change was significant and there is no longer any distinct point at which the turbo "kicks in". Also, I am enjoying better fuel economy now. Pre adjustment, my in-town mileage was 21-23 MPG; post adjustment mileage (4-5 tanks) has increased to 24-25 in town and 27+ highway.

I'm actually considering pulling the ALDA and adding some shims underneath it.

Did you find a source for the shims? The member here that was going to help me find them couldn't get them any longer.

awesome, those shims sound like a good idea. But has anyone figured out how to turn the pump up w/o pulling the IP???? I have read many threads, but no one seems to have done it yet. Looks to be easier on the 603.

I was unable to get the shims from the local Bosch rebuilder. If I knew the size I believe I can order some, does anyone have the ID and OD of a suitable shim washer for an Alda? I don't have a ALDA off a vehicle to "play with"
If I get some it will be a quantity for a group buy. GB. the postage will probably be equal to or more than the cost of the shims.
And to answer DieselBone, I am not certain what you mean turn the pump up, but if you mean increase ALDA thsi procedure is well documented on the Shopforum. Basically, you peel away the metal cover that sits in the top center of the ALDA then adjust the nut (carefully, there is a locknut too!) under it CCW to increase but its recommended you do it in 1 turn or 2 turn increments, and remember how many turns you made, in case you have to revert back (ie. if you start blowing smoke like I did after 3 or 4 turns out).
OTOH If you meant the maximum fuel delivery limit adjustment that is in effect the WOT setpoint, yes that is under the cover on the IP used with the OM603 but to get to it on a 617 the IP has to be removed, I saw it done at the Bosch shop, its pretty difficult and I wouldn't want to do it else the calibration get messed up.

I must try adjusting the ALDA. My turbo doesn't do anything until 2500 rpm. My fuel economy is only 20-21 mph, but I've only driven this car through 1 tank of fuel.

Would a stock ALDA have a shim in it? If so I could probably try to get one off an IP from the local Pick-n-Pull.

How do you change an ALDA?

That's my question. Is it too technical?

I have not done it personally, but it's quite straightforward. Apparently there is one large nut beneath it that holds it in place.

Dave could change one in under three minutes on the 603 once he got good at it.

The 617 has better access.

On my 602, I just popped the windshield washer reservoir loose and then it's relatively easy to get it with the right length wrenches. After the first time, I was doing it in a few minutes as well. Just took a little while to figure it out the first time! .. but yes, it made a huge difference. No more "kick-in" can be felt by the turbo. It just comes into play nice and smoothly and doesn't take off at 2200 rpm any more.

The nut on the Alda is smaller than the nut behind the wheel.

I think most of our wives would agree with that in general about us.
