Coil spring compressor

I know the external ones just won't work for our cars.

How about these?

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=384606&R=384606&cm_ven=PPC&cm_cat=Performics&cm_pla=Google&cm_ite=Google

I'm tempted to buy a set and try.

Gotta love the quote on their site.

Missing fingernails, now that makes you a man."

Ummmm you have a death wish, don't you?

I used a set of rental ones twice as beefy as those and they bent and groaned. And was affraid the entire time they were going to pop.

The Bense springs are under almost 4" of compression with the wheels in the air...and they are heavy springs on top of that.

Just a word of warning.

No, don't go there.

If the pic is any indication, that unit isn't anywhere near long enough to release the compression on a spring that's been removed from the car.

Looking a little deeper I agree. These won't work.

I search on Perfermance Products and the compressor they list now for Mercedes is the same type.

http://************************/ProductPage.aspx?ProductName=Coil+Spring+Compressor&productid=101610&producttype=20

That confused me. Does anyone know where one can rent the proper compressor? I really don't feel like shelling out $500 for one. At that price I might as well get my Indy to do the bushings.

i have used those type many many times on mercedes front springs they work just fine, you just have to cut off 2-3 inches of thread so it fits without hitting whenyou tighten it up compress it

the rear spring dont need any spring compression to remove , , just unblot the main bolt under the spring and it drops right out everytime put new one back in is just has easy

hope this helps

JamesStein, PerformanceProducts is probably just showing a generic picture instead of the the compressor they actually rent. You might want to call and ask. As for what a Mercedes spring can do to those, the pictures below are courtesy of gsxr.

that looks scary , it would help if the sway bar was unbolted to drop it down a few more inches and a chain or rope is always helpfull in extra protection

I just bought a MB spring compressor from El Paso tools on Ebay for $219. I think its a clone of the SIR product. Funny thing is it shipped from Baum Tools in Florida which is where Phil gets some of his tools for Fastlane so maybe he can help you out? UPS tracking indicates it will be delivered tomorrow so I'll let you know what I think when I get it. RT

The El Paso tool is more like the Klann, rather than the SIR tool. I have seen/used all three and now own and use the El Paso tool. There are some very slight differences in the "slopes" leading to the capture points for the lugs on the bottom plate; otherwise it's a Klann clone . Once you've gotten used to checking the engagement of the lugs, it's a breeze to use.

Edit: mine's actually the ZDmak tool...same thing.

(all the usual disclaimers apply when discussing spring compressors.)

Let us know how this spring compressor works out.

I was looking at the exact same one on Ebay.

Both Performance Products and Rusty @ *************** rent the proper spring compressor. More than likely cheaper than life insurance.

rwthomas1,

Please give us your impression of the El Paso.
I called Phil at fastlane and he said BaumTools has a unit for $650.00 but he does not have access to an El Paso tool. He was interested in another source.
Thanks

There is a thread where Thomasspin had a photo of a M/B front coil spring fully compressed, sitting on the ground, in the El Paso compressor.

He stated that he had no problems with it.

That's good enough for me.
