I'd love to have a gasser w123 2.8 straight 6. Depends on what the asking price is though.

As much as I love my diesel and I do. I've always loved the MB 6-cyl. I would say go for it depending on the price, thats a desirable car.

Isn't that the famous (infamous?) M110 twin cam "rock crusher" motor with the noisey tappets? Nice power but your friends might think a diesel is still under the hood.....

No this is a M127 motor SOHC, only 4 main bearings, totally different motor.

Thumbs up good choice

Yeah, thats the 2.8 DOHC engine (M110) They got the cam figured out in the late 70's. An 82 should be fine, as long as it has had regular oil changes. They still have a kinda noisy valve train, but the power is still there, 185hp I think. Thats a far cry from our 616........

Question Is this a Grey Market

I can't seem to find any parts listings for this wagen. I checked and it seems all of the wagens like this one are for sale in Australia.

Gas wagons were brought in by individuals, not imported by MBUSA. I had a chance to buy one for $1200 several years ago, but it was rusty and didn't run and looked pretty rough, so I declined.
Maybe if it had had a stick transmission and actually ran, I would have considered it.

It was brought into the US by a returning GI, and had Euro headlights.

You might have to find some parts abroad, but I think the motor was installed in some sedans that were imported by MBUSA.

Supid me, I might 617.........

The injected M110 was put into the 280E and 280CE, which they did import. I'm not sure if MBZ made a 280SE (L) with that motor. They never did sell 280TE's in the US, Richard Eldridge is right. Parts shouldn't be that hard to find, I'm sure fastlane can get almost anything. I saw an early 80's 280TE on ebay last year, it was blue.

My friend's mom bought one of these a couple years ago for $5000 off someone locally without checking it out beyond "it runs" It had RUST everywhere, a HOLE in it behind the front wheel on the body, and the differential whined, locks didn't work, windows didn't work. hatch didn't open after a while....and it did exactlly what you said above in the quote sounded just like a diesel with the hood open! clackclackclackclack However, on the freeway it MOVED quite quickly(that engine sounds awesomeeee)....she complained of getting about 12-13mpg. Then she blew the tranny, had that replaced for a few thousand, had all the brakes completely redone for a couple more, then she had the electrical system fail on a trip from their cottage, then after her friend got it running again on another return trip from their cottage her rusty oil lines blew out and she sprayed all the oil out in no time, and seized the engine. Total cost to her: about $12k, years of use: 1.5....miles traveled about 12,000 It passed away with 179,000ish on it. I believe it was an '85. Now she drives a new mazda.......

Sad story indeed. I would love to find a parts car with a good engine to stick in my `76....
