So, will a 2.47 non-locker from a 420SEL (W126) fit a W123? My 300SDL (a 2.88) has a weird appendage on the subframe (for anti-torque I guess) and the diffy cover is not the same as a W123 either but I think that a regular W123 diffy cover will fit the pumpkin and thus make it useable on a W123.

Answer: This diff will not fit the W-123.

Went on a 1500 mile ski trip last weekend and the car did great. The first two tanks were done against a stiff headwind and yielded just under 25mpg at 80-90mph cruise (mostly 90). The return trip tank came back with 27.4mpg and my average speed was close to 90mph for 500 miles.

There's a 12 mile, 3000 ft climb to the ski area and I had to pull the shift lever to the bottom position a few times to get a downshift to first gear on the slow switchbacks. I had to manually shift to the next gear for upshifts.

So how did it compare

So now that you have some mileage with the new diff how did it compare performance wise and mileage wise against the old one? Although I would not see myself driving my 300sd at 90 with the original gears.

Just for noise reduction alone the 2.47 is worth it and I would not go back to a 3.07 in a hundred years. I think performance is about the same and mileage is 2mpg better though it is a little early to say fer sure. The 500SEL speedo I bought for $23, shipped works perfectly also.

I'm never looking back.

Great writeup, Dieselgeek.....I wonder if we've crossed paths here in the live music capital of the world?

Maybe one day I'll have to do that with my '84, just for the noise part.

Dieselgeek u da man!! I read your posts on this 2.47 differential swap. Last week I bought a 2.47 pumpkin and this morning I installed it. After installation, I drove approximately 200 miles and they were the most enjoyable 200 miles that I have driven this 300SD. Quiet and smooth are the only words to describe the experience. Ample power was available at all times. If I get better fuel mileage that would be great, if I don't get better mileage I don't even care. The comfort factor is astounding. One other point, which I believe you hit upon was the size differential of the differentials. For a few moments I was questioning whether that V-8 pumpkin was actually going to work, but it went right in with absolutely on problems. Thanks for the great thread.

Bob,

The ABS sensor had been left on the pumpkin with the wires cut behind the sensor. I don't have ABS on my 84, so I just ignored it and went forward. No ramifications, no problems. Good luck with your project. This was the easiest project with the most benefits that I have done in quite some time. I will pick up a speedometer in the near future and make the experience even more enjoyable.

Would the 1988 420 sel diff fit a 1980 300td wagon if the diff cover is changed? Also heard that the diff mount can be turned around? Thanks.

No, it will not fit. It's a completely different mounting system.

Nice article...

I dont believe for a minute the 380 diff was LSD. Without proof or pictures it's all just a story.

2 minutes?

Great story/ write up.
Man, someone wiped the dust of this one...

I can barely describe with words how excited I am to try this. This project is entirely in the planning stage for me and awaiting financial contributions from a few paychecks. My 617 is in a great state of health thanks to some '*****in Monark injectors from Sean C. Watts, a recent valve adjustment made possible by a set of fine wrenches crafted by Doc in Tucson, various parts from Lord Phil, a full EGR delete with some plates I machined myself (one of which I made from a 1960's german coin), and various other small things.
my power is bountiful, so I can't wait for this diff swap.
