300d slips after cooling line breaks

I have a 76 300d with a transmission problem. The readiator had just been cored and cleaned. On the way home, the cooling line that goes from the tranny to the radiator exploded and leaked all the fluid out. I drove the car for about a mile down the road (oblivious to the carnage underneath) until the tranny began to slip.
I had the line fixed to see if the transmission was toast. It slips whenever I try to accelerate. If I drop it down to second it doesnt slip at all. I have heard that there is some ajustment with the bands, but automatic transmissions are rather mysterious to me. I don't know if its time to drop this tranny or try to fix it.

If the fluid level is now correct and it still slips the transmission may have been damaged.

Clutch packs which essentially serve to hold the transmission in gear with the application of hydraulic pressure are very sensitive to lubrication as the friction element is usually a specially formulated type of paper.

If it was run dry, it is possible the multiple disk clutch packs could have been burnt and are thus unable to hold a gear without slipping.

Sounds to me like "someone" owes you a new transmission.

That someone is the individual who installed the radiator.

I would,,,

Drive starting off in second as long as it shifts into all gears correctly after changing to "D"

You might get lucky and the tranny might start working again.

I had a tranny in a '76 240D that kept leaking tranny fluid, I'd wait til it started slipping and I would add a quart.

The tranny's are pretty strong.

Good luck.

Marty
