Glow plugs issues!!
my plugs seem to be getting juice, however, I am getting hard starts and no starts when its cold....
My GP light does not light at all, unless the plug in my relay is disconnected, then it lights for a few seconds with the other dash lights....... Could this mean a bad relay??????

My glow plug light didn't come on until I replaced all the bad ones.

My W116 light still rarely comes on with 5 new plugs.......and it doesn't buzz either but it does start.
But my parts car does it all correctly. When ts warmer its parts swapping time.

Just a thought, if you do not disconnect the wires from the glow plugs they will read conductivity no matter how bad they are.
If I have doubts, such as the engine wont start, or the gp light don't come on, I remove the wiring harness from the plugs and check each with a volt/ohmeter. Any odd reading at all and that one gets pulled out. Then I clamp it in the vise and ground the vise and touch the end with 12 v. If good it will get hot, if not will do nothing. That is the most surefire way to get it up and running. Your symptoms are pointing to at least two, if not three glow plugs out. A well running MB diesel will start with two out, but not easily with three out. That the gp light is goofy is even more of an indicator.

I just replaced the glow plugs and relay in my 85 sd. My relay was bad, only coming on intermitantly, finally not at all. The glow plugs in the car had 115,00 miles on them, and the bosch kit with the glow plugs was cheaper than replacing the relay, so I did them all, and it made a huge difference. The car starts much quicker (of coarse its been warmer too), and idles smoother right after starting. My advice is to replace the glow plugs and the relay, and be done with it.

This winter I was having hard starting issues with my 84 300d. The GP light would come on intermittently and only for only a few seconds even in cold weather. I could hear the GP relay click off way too early. Replacing the GP's improved starting a little but the GP light was still intermittent and the relay still clicked off too early. After testing the relay fuse, I swapped the GP controller from my wagon into the sedan and now the system works perfectly! Even at -10 it starts like its summer!
My advice? Test the plugs (or just replace if they're old), test the fuse in the relay for conductivity (there can be hairline fractures) and then replace the relay. Its great to have an easy starter!

I did the vise check as suggested (thanks), and found that two plug were bad......
Im gonna by a used relay along w/ 2 new plugs, so only to make one trip to my merc part man...... Thanks again for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
