KKK Turbo wastegate adjustment
I have a 84 300 turbo diesel and the wastegate adjustment location is very close to the inside finder ,there is about 2 inches of clearance. Has anybody
adjusted one of these with normal tools or without raising engine up to gain access. Thanks |
Are your motor mounts sagging??? The adjustment is usually easier to get to than that, but still requires avery short allen wrench...Bert

I would like someone to confirm something for me. I am looking at a tutorial for adjusting the KKK turbocharger and the description seems kinda vague to me. It says "The adjusting screw sticks right out of the top (sideways on engine) of the wastegate chamber and does not require removal of a cap."
What I see is an adjustment screw sticking horizontal out of the bottom of the turbo compressor and right above the motor mount. I'm sure this is it but I would feel a lot better adjusting it with some confirmation. Is that locknut the same 8mm that's found on the Garret? It looks like a PITA to adjust. I'm worse than lakerat. I only have about 1" of clearance. Hmmm, I'm gonna have to do a search on motor mounts. Thanks Danny |
There is vertical drop mounts are not the issue

Danny, I have a 83 300TD with the same turbo. What I found is that there is a vertical drop of the walls near the wastegate. That said looking into mounts won't help. I took few pictures how to do it, and some other projects, but for the life of me I can't find the cable that connects the Digi to my laptop. I'll post pictures as soon as I find the cable. Question for the forum members: In order to increase the boost should I turn the 3mm alen CW or CCW (after the release of the lock nut)? Thanks in advance, Yossi |
Waste gate adjustment
If you search for posts under my name in the member list you will find a picture of the waste gate. I adjusted mine with out a problem, BUT you need a shorty allen wrench and you will burn a few knuckles on the turbo in the process.

To increase boost, turn it CW, higher spring tension means more air PSI to compress the spring before opening. You NEED a boost gauge before adjusting boost. It's impossible to adjust it by "feel" without breaking something. I don't know about others, but my KKK turbo is really bad about boost creep. Under load above 3500rpm, it will creep up about 4psi no matter my base setting. I think the A/R is just a little too small for a 3L engine. I dream of a day, when I can have twin Garrett VNT-15's on a 4BT Cummins under the hood. ...Does anybody want to sponsor me? ;) |
I had to use a pair of vise grips on a socket to loosen the nut that was the only tool I could get into that tight space and then I used the short end of an allen .

Need help to get more than 9PSI
Well, the PO of the car told me that he adjusted it to be @8 PSI, at the time I knew nothing about Diesel turbo or just diesel to be honest.
3 months later, I would like to increase the pressure. I guess that the PO read 0.8 bar and thought it is 8 PSI. Anyhow I turned the screw CW ( I guessed that this is the right thing to do, thanks for the confirmation) and got to a whoping 9PSI. Question to people who did it. How much do you need to turn the screw to get 1PSI boost ? I didn't want to over do it so I stayed on the safe side. I hope to play with it tomorrow morning and take it for another test drive. Phil, I searched your profile as you suggested and couldn't find the photo. PS. I waited at least 1 hour after testing before I touched the car so no burned knokles :-). I have so many bruises on my right arm from cleaning the car with purple power, that's another story though. |

No more than 9.5 PSI :-(

I get 9PSI starting at about 2000RPM if there is a load and I push it. Any advice what should I look into in order to bring it to at least 12PSI ? Thanks, Yossi |
boost
boost will react to heat rather than rpm. so if it is turning 4000 with minimal load the boost may level off... so adjusting the screw may not make any difference. i am sure some of these guys will chime in on this. i havent actually done it.

Hey,
the first thing I would do is check ALL the hoses. Wastegate hose and the line from the banjo bolt on back of turbo to protection switch to alda. If anyone of these leak it can rob you of boost. If you have a mity-vac see if they hold vacuum. Danny |
I tried the car under load at 4000 and yet no more than 9.5PSI
I replaced the hose from the banjo bolt to the alda. While I was at it, I cleaned the bolt, it was so dirty. I guess that the EGR helped :-) with the gunk. No more EGR problem, thanks Brian for the kits. The wastegate hose is not tight yet I was thinking that not much pressure can leak there as we are reving the engine at 4000RPM (3x4000 /10 ~1200 cubic feet /sec ). How much pressure can leak through the hose ? I'm not sure that this is a valid argument so please correct me if it is not valid. Thanks, Yossi OOPS needed to recalculate, forgot that cubic is not square :-) 3x4000 = 12000 liters/sec ~ 444 Cubic feet/sec |
Hey,
I believe that threaded adjustment rod is hollow. see if you can get a hose on a can of PB Blaster and spray some in there. Also, screwing it in and out all the way a few times might loosen it up. Be gentle don't go overboard. If you feel too much resistance then stop. Danny |
