just picked up an '80 300TD in Jacksonville, FL

Hi,

Any other 300TD owners or diesel enthusiasts in the Jacksonville, FL area? I'd like to meet up and talk shop.

Were there non turbo 300TD's in 1980...mine does not have a turbo.

I belive the color is Palomino, with beige interior. The condition is OK. Has been with the previous owner for the last 5 years and has seen many, many trips back and forth from Jax to New Hampshire. Car was originally from the Orlando area.

I'd like to eventually go WVO. Anyone in my area running wvo, svo or bio?

My previous Mercedes was a '94 E320 sedan.

As a lawyer would say " asked and answered".... 1980 was a transition year so you can find both.

Congrats on your find. You'll love it. I've been running SVO blended with dino diesel in my wagon and it works great.

Actually, I believe the first year for the turbo on the 300D was in '82. I just picked up an 81 300D with 57,600 miles on it from a guy out in Vegas and it has no turbo either.

To my surprise the rear wheel wells of this desert car have a slight rust problem. Guess I shouldn't be surprised since when I opened the trunk there was three or four inches of water standing in both sides. Should be an easy fix.

The car evidently wasn't registered the last couple of years, so there are some minor fixes that need to be taken care of. It needs a wheel alignment, steering adjustment, washer pump replaced and the left rear passenger door vacuum is not working. Carpets, seats, glass and rubber are flawless.

Getting the wife's '82 300D Turbo tweaked and ready to put on the market. It has about 160,000 on it and will make somebody a good daily driver. I'm in northwest Florida if anyone out there is interested.

Don, I assumed by TD he meant a wagon... I have a 79 parts wagon which is non turbo and my 81 TD was built in Nov of 80 and was a turbo...

Leathermang,

I've owned these cars since 1985 and I still get confused as to which one is the wagon and which is the sedan, so you could well be right.

I have a friend who has an '83 wagon and has the same water problem. Anyone have any idea where it is coming from and what to do to fix it? It occurs on the passenger side of the wagon and the carpet is soaked. The other night it was frozen.

I believe for the 300TD, TD meant Touring Diesel, not Turbo Diesel. The Turbo'd cars had another Turbo Diesel nameplate on them as well.

It's my understanding that '81 was the transition year for the turbo cars. My '81 300TD (wagon) is a turbo car.

Mine is a 1980 and has no turbo (thank god). What kind shape is the wagon? How many miles? What did you pay for it? Inquiring minds want to know...

Regarding the question concerning water problems. I've encountered three different ones on my cars. They are:

- The drain under the battery tray on the passenger side and to the middle of the car apparently got clogged and rusted out. This caused the water to drain into the front passenger compartment and flow to the right rear passenger floorboard. This in turn caused or contributed to the floorpan seam rusting through. So I plugged that drain and drove a hole in the metal under the battery tray for water to drain straight down.
- Perhaps in conjunction with the above, the undercoating of the car along that seam cracked/rusted and water was also getting into the rear of the car via this means when driving in the rain.

These were on the '82 300D Turbo. I cleaned the rust off and sprayed some rust inhibitor on the area. Then I sealed that puppy with J.B. Weld and siliconed over it both inside and underneath the car. I'm sure somebody will tell me if I goofed in doing this or not, but I'm thinking I got a pretty good fix on the problem.

Then today I found a different leak on the recent acquistion (81 300D). This was the result of a dried out rear window gasket. Water drained into the trunk as well as into the passenger compartment. Water was pooled in the right speaker compartment. I suspect the problem of rust in the wheel wells was partially caused by this leak. The water also managed to pretty much destroy the decking board and carpet inside where the speakers and first aid kit sit. So, I pulled everything out and rinsed it where it seemed reasonable to do so. The moulded board and carpet which sit on it seem pretty much shot, so I'm looking for same.

Rather than replace that gasket right now I put a bead of silicone all the way around the gasket on the outside. Looks like I've got it sealed off for the moment, but will probably replace that gasket in the near future.

Decent shape. Seems to be a battery power drain somewhere. I had to recharge the battery the other day.

Price was reasonable

Drop me a line sometime. I'd like to meet up and compare wagons and see what parts you may have.

Send me an email at neumannfamily@yahoo.com with your local contact info and I'll call.
