What are c220d 1996/7 like?

I am coming back to Mercedes after a bad exp with toyota - Estima import with 28k - cracked head. Common problem apparently - and many many $$££. Avoid that 2.2 if you're ever tempted. Looking at 1996/7 diesels. Anything I should know (have only had w123s in the past)
