I don't consider groups like CARB or even the EPA "true" environmental groups - I agree that a lot of environmentalists are indeed clueless not unlike any other group or it's members

as some one who considers himself a friend of the environment is p*sses me off to see this kind of misinformation being spouted through the mainstream media outlets who a) don't have their facts together and b) refer to the agencies that promote this anti diesel mentality as environmental groups.

in fact it was my commitment to a cleaner environment that motivated me to go diesel in the first place.

Like any other situation where the media has it all wrong, I will be getting my ducks in a row putting together something for the letters to the editor.

I would recommend that we all do what we can to dispel the myths and if you see rubbish written like above send a letter to the editor and set em straight.

-Scott

I went to diesel because the wife has to do a lot of out of town traveling and for long distances unlike just a 5 mile commute. As such, I was getting 24 on my 99 C280 and 31 on my 99 E300. You can see the reason to switch in spite of the fact that I have hardly any diesel stations besides truck stops and the fuel makes a bigger mess on the floor and gelling issues, having to glow before start, etc, etc. I would recommend it for people in my situation but if they were only doing short commutes to and from work, I would have stuck with a gas car because fo the convenience factor.

If you want to bang your head against the wall, go ahead. They have made up their mind about the diesel that it is dirty and has issues. They will not change. I have not seen anyone really change his/her mind after it is made up. As such, I won't bother banging my head aginst the wall to see if it will crack first or my head will crack first. IF someone is in my situation, I might recommend a diesel but if not, why bother.

I too have a long commute, fortunately I have diesel stations close by on both sides of my commute.

for me I have a tendency to fight the good fight even if I know in my heart it is a losing battle. speaking from personal experience I too used to subscribe to the theory that diesels were dirtier but after meeting an environmentalist (hard core crunchy granola type.. god love her) I learned the truth. I have also had some good luck on getting op-ed pieces published which admittedly might not have swayed the "journalist" but definitely impacted and educated some readers. I figure that if I can liberate one person with truth than my effort wasn't in vain.

fortunately for me so much info is readily available online that I can pretty much C&P and format and I am good,

Dang, we agree on something again-that's why my wife drives a gasser Scion/Toyota xB-she never goes far enough when she drives the Benz and I really blow out the deadly smoke cloud when I drive it afterwards!!!

100 Mpg

This MPG is available right now --- tho the car isn't imported into the states 'cause VW doesn't feel like certifying it --- I forget the model number ---- and it is very small ---- but they sell a 3 cyl turbodiesel in Europe that is rated at 90 MPG, and 2 different "economy" drivers took it on long trips --- one of 2600 miles --- and got about 110 MPG with it.

I believe it's the Polo.

Why would they NOT want to sell it here? If the 1.9L/2.0L TDI's are kicking the Hybrids butt's as-is, why not just go all the way and hand their @ss to them and kick them back to Japan!?!?

Probably the same reason MB doesn't import any of their lower level models to the U.S. It isn't profitable for them.

I saw european car show on Speed Channel over a year ago. They showed a new S-Class witha V-12 tuner diesel. That thing kicked some serious a$$, and performed like a S500. You'll never see it here. I'm glad they have the new E300 diesel. At last, a new MB diesel.

All this pollution stuff is really exaggerated. Just like the clunker law on old cars. Crush them and you'll get credits to use toward your emmission violations.

POLI-TICS = Multiple Blood Suckers..

On the east side of Madison, there are 3 stations with diesel. One fo them sucks and the others are ok.

Actually, I never cared about emmissions as far as choosing a car because of that. I pick my battles carefully. If it is a losing battle, I just give up and walk away as best as I can. Why struggle? You only die tired.
