300D on Ebay

Hi I'm currently the high bidder on a 300d on Ebay that is in Atlanta. I would like to have some members opinions of the car. And, perhaps if there are some members in the Atlanta area, if they have looked at this car. I've been a daily reader of the forum and this would be my first Mercedes Benz. My father had two diesels and I guess I have the diesel bug. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Charlie

The lack of a/c is a concern. Contacted seller and he said that it "hasn't worked in a while, but that the fan works".

From the pics and the decription it looks like a nice car. I wouldn't pay more then $3k for it though, their are a lot of 300D's around.

The rear tail light could be found through someone on this site, or at a junkyard. The wood looks like a fast fix also. The rust spot does require a little further investigation.

It looks good to me too. I don't think that many of us here are surprised that the A/C doesn't work... nothing a grand couldn't fix.

A big plus is that he says he has all of the records from day one.

On the downside (sort of) is that unless they have been replaced already, be prepared to do the ball joints. Won't cost you any limbs if you do some of the work yourself...its not really difficult either. -ask him if any front end work has been done- The tie rod ends won't be due for another 40-60k.

If I was looking for another 300D, I would seriously consider that one.

Another big plus is if you can have Benzene look at it - Benzene knows a thing or two.

Hard to see but I think I see oil pressure reading (engines running when photo taken) but nothing from the tach. Not that big of a deal, and I may be mistaken.

The rest of the car doesn't look to bad. The lower mileage is nice.

Please read carefully

The vehicle looks like it was reasonably well cared for, however, you are looking at about $1300. right off the bat for the a/c, taillight and misc. other items that are not working.

So, you definitely don't want to pay more than $3K for it.

The problem with this vehicle right now is that:

You are continuing to bid the price up.

Stop right now and do not bid again on this vehicle until the last 30 seconds of the auction.

Then, put in your final price, the maximum price that you will pay for it. The worst thing you can possibly do is to bid against one other person several days prior to the end of the auction. You have already done this somewhat with the second bidder and it will probably cost you some money.

Make sure that you are thoroughly familiar with proxy bidding and how it works. If not, please post again and we will advise you.

The vehicle can sell for the price it is currently at, considering the fact that the a/c is non-functional.

Please explain the proxy bidding. I'm not going to bid any more since the a/c and other items mentioned. Someone mentioned the tach not working how serious is that?

What is that silver beauty in the background? If it belongs to the same family, the car was probably dealer maintained, and you can feel relatively safe. Only thing that looks wierd is that it is a california model, so certain elements are moved around under the hood...

Normally I'd be able to take a peek for you, but I've got meetings during all the daylight hours on Friday and out of town guests coming Fri night.

Looks nice, only worry I'd have was the rust. more and more I'm realizing that it's rather like cockroaches and/or an iceberg. there is usually much more hiding somewhere else than what you see. I'm hoping that is not the case with my wagons!

Best of luck
k

Proxy bidding works as follows:

Let's say the bids start at $10.00

Say "Moe" makes the first bid on that car of $1000.

The bid goes up to $35.00. "Moe" is high bidder. (I'm assuming a $25.00 bid increment).

"Larry" is a new fellow and he raises the bid by the bid increment. He bids $60.00.

E-Bay instantly bids "by proxy" on behalf of "Moe" the amount of $85.00.

Larry instantly sees that "Moe" has outbid him even though "Moe" never even was near his computer.

So, Larry, being a new guy, bids again. He now bids up by the bid increment: $110.00.

Same thing happens. The computer immediately bids $135. for "Moe".

This happens until the price reaches $1000. Only then will "Moe" need to raise his bid if he wants the vehicle.

So, the bottom line is this: You never know how much the high bidder has bid for the vehicle. It might be quite a bit above the current bid price.
