Tranny ID on '82 240d?
Can someone tell me how to identify the particular automatic transmission on an '82 240D? Is it stamped on the tranny somewhere or can it be determined by the numbers on the ID tag?
This car has had some questionable transmission work done by the previous owners, i'm trying to put everything back together the right way, but since this is my first Mercedes, i'm a little clueless. The engine runs well enough, has decent compression numbers, but it doesnt seem to be communicating with its tranny very well. Seems to upshift way too soon, thus not developing much power or acceleration. From what i've read so far, the throttle pressure seems to be off. The throttle linkage doesnt seem to be like any pictures i've seen. No bowden cable or rod connecting from the tranny to the linkage. (there is a lever on the passenger side of the tranny that looks like it SHOULD be connected to the throttle linkage... plus some spare linkage parts strewn throughout the car!) Now i've also read that some of these models are totally vacuum controlled, so i was wondering how do i determine exactly which model i have? (I'm NOT certain that this is even the cars original transmission... hence my present confusion!) Some little stamped numbers sure might help... thanks for reading my ramble... greg |

You should find a string of numbers stamped on the center casting JUST above the oil pan on the passengers side. If this is a four-bolt oil pan (which I think it is) it should be a 722.1xx. Maybe someone who has an 82 auto can speak up and describe what linkages /vacuum control he/she has?
Mine is a stick.
