Speedo works but odometer don't

I always thought these two worked off the same cable, so that if one weren't working neither were working....

Happens alot. Do a little search, and you will see how to fix it.

PS:The cable is still good... its just a little gear thats come loose.

There are three approaches to fixing it. The problem is that the trip odo becomes sticky and causes drag that prevents the main odo from turning.

Choice one, send it to a speedo repair shop.

Choice two, if you don't mind hacking it up some and can do without the trip odo, you can simply remove the spur gear that connects the two odo's.

Choice three, if you are handy with tools, you can pull the speedo unit out of the cluster and take it to the bench. File the flats off one end of the pin that goes through the trip odo and pull it out. Clean all pieces and lube them and reassemble. Then use a pair of vise grips or maybe pliers if you have a strong enough grip to reflatten the end of the pin to hold in place.

Your choice will be determined by how nice the car is and your own attitude about how you want to take care of the car.

Hope this helps,

I thought the speedo on the '84 300D was electronic.

I am interested in option 2:
"Choice two, if you don't mind hacking it up some and can do without the trip odo, you can simply remove the spur gear that connects the two odo's."

Sure wish I could see this b4 I got into it.
Searched for an hour last night, to no avail for pics...

We did option three on both 123s. It wasn't that bad of a job either. Just be carefull with the trip re-set that the parts don't fall away.

Well, my '82 300SD is not cable driven it is electric.
So if 2+2=4 then his '84 300D is electric also.
Yes, No???

W123s are cable driven. W126s are electronic.

This thread is a fine example of how MBshop rocks!

Instead of having to put up with my lame post about looking for some vague little gear, and suggesting a search, fellow members have come up with something a bit more specific, and have even included a picture.
A sure sign that I should shut up more often.
