Request of a thorough step by step pictorial of W123 odometer repair please

I've read all the threads on how to repair the W123 odometer that has the problem of working on a intermittent basis or not at all, but, I never see any pictures of the repair. I for one would like to see step by step pictures on how to repair the odometer. I'm sure others would like to see this too. I hope someone can do this, or if it's already on the net, send a link to the page with that on it.
-Joe

There was a very good illustrated article on this in the Star magazine about 6 or 7 years ago. Maybe someone can look up the article.

The trick to the whole thing, however, is to file off the flat on one end of the shaft that goes through the middle of the trip odometer number set. Then you can slide out the shaft for clean and lube of everything then slide the shaft back through the number wheels. You then crimp a flat in the end of the shaft with vise grips so that it won't slide out. As long as you know this, you should be able to figure everything else out as you go.

I don't, however, know what would be the best lube. Maybe someone can offer that info.

Good luck,

Sorry no pics, but...

... this is the thread I used to repair the itinerant odometer on my 85 wagon.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=90607&highlight=odometer

The initial post covers the process, and a followup post includes a great suggestion for using a drill bit to drive out the shaft to keep the tumblers from going everywhere.

It may be difficult to visualize, but once you have the odometer out of the car and in your hands all should be clear. Overall, its a really simple repair.

H-townbenzoboy, you and I are wanting the same thing.
I guess we will have to create it, if we can't surface that Star mag article.
I will do mine Fri, and send you pics is all else fails...

Diesel Giant, could you turn down the volume on your opening page a bit. Whenever I forget to turn down my speakers before visiting your site, I come close to a heart attack.

Dieselgiant...

I've been looking at your Transmission Vacuum Valve Lever Replacement Tutorial

Does any of that apply to my 300SDL?
I've got the hood open now...
and I feel like a monkey that has been handed a slide rule.

I replaced one vacuum line that was obviously leaking.. ( and one other )
I don't see any more obvious problems...
but my tranny is still shifting hard and late.

Can you point me in the direction that I should be digging into this?

my engine

Gracias

Maybe you should put the sound of a 240 Diesel there instead. It's not so scary
I would love it!

its a five minute fix.....did mine without any visual aid. Takes longer to get the speedo out of the cluster than it does to fix.
