Braided Return Hose

Is braided return hose necessary on a 1984-300D Turbo??? Can high pressure fuel rubber hose be used on the return side of the injectors?????????Or is the return side low pressure???thanks for any comments....Jim

Get the right stuff its cheap enough.....use the right stuff and you will have a decade or two of trouble free service. Be halfassed and its going to fail you on some remote stretch of road.

The return side seems to be low pressure, but I can feel it pulsing.

I wonder if the braid keeps the rubber from expanding with each pulse, loosening and eventually popping off of the barb on the return?

There has to be some reason M-B has used it for all of these years...

Oh, and it is not expensive!

Best Regards,
Jim

It has to be the right material too....that won't deteriorate with the diesel and the heat under the hood. Thats why "anything that fits" isn't a good choice.

So, what is "The right stuff" & where do you get it? I need to replace them on mine too because they leak at the injectors a little.

Thanks!

I recently bought some at the dealer. $12 per meter. A meter is about what you need for a four-cylinder. Not quite enough for a five-cylinder.

De Bone Head is right about pricing...you can get a kit for about 4 dollars a foot on ebay and here on Fastlane you can buy 3 meters for about less than 3 dollars a foot...I just purchased 3 meters from Fastlane...Any one that wants to buy some, just reply by PM to me....3 dollars a foot plus about 2.50 for USPS....the 2.50 is for the padded envelope plus postage anywhere in America...thanks to BoneHead Doctor .....Jim

TangoFox, one meter did my 6-cylinder OM 603 just fine...

James, you are most welcome, glad to have been of assistance.

Yes, you might get away with a meter on the 617, if the injector nipples line up front & rear and you are frugal with the hose routing. But if you route the hose so there are no sharp bends, it is easy to use up the meter and need a few additional inches (or should I say "centimeters.") I would hate to see someone buy a meter and then find out that it was not enough, after they had destroyed all the old hoses. In fact, I seem to recall a post some time back that described that very predicament.

Probiibly best to order 2 meters......better to have too much than find you have too little at the last minute. Its cheap enough.

Hey,
I had enough extra hose where I could cut off 1/8 or 3/16 of an inch and put it back on.
No more leaks.

Great.....mine was leaking through its walls however and that wasn't an option (on the W116).....will do my W123 when I make my next parts order. Little leakage near one of the injectors now...

A good reason to be "generous" when replacing the return lines.

Anyone that has ever had experience with Fuel line as compared to the RIGHT fuel line for a Aircooled VW knows the difference this stuff has. Basically with regular fuel hose, you press it on and clamp it (unless there is a barb or whatnot. This braided stuff you merely press on and have a HELL of a time getting it off...no barbs required.
The braided stuff IMHO is much better than the rubber equivilants also becuase of heat resistance combined with the reduced "popping off" factor.

I bought my hose from fastlane, 3 bags I think would do it (2 of my lines were already new...I just had to replace a few).
You will need a box knife or such to get the old hose off if it is brittle. Make sure you route properly, there are places for stuff to be fed though
