OT - my diesel conversion in my Vanagon runs!

Just finished converting my gas westfalia camper to a 1.6td engine. Fired it up today and took off down the road. The wastegate is stuck open - producing copius amounts of soot on acceleration until we disabled it and brough the turbo boost up. Other than that it rusns great and will get its first tank of blend when I run out the diesel.

IN other news, I bought an 82 240d for the engine for $100 to put in my broken timing chain 80 240. Anybody need a manual 4sp conversion set-up?

Did you have any trouble mounting the power steering pump? Did you use a stock diesel Vanagon bellhousing and engine mount setup, or an adapter kit? Did the turbo have any clearance issues with the engine mount bracket? Sorry for all the Q's, but I'd like to install a tdi engine in my '89 Wolfsburg Edition someday. Used to own an '82 Vanagon diesel many moons ago.

congrats! how much did the swap cost and where did you obtain the td motor? I've contemplated a similar project myself.

Count me in line for those conversion parts. I will drive up with cash in hand to get them.

Let me get the car here this weekend...any suggestions for pricing on a complete conversion kit. Not looking for top dollar but it will take me alot of time to pull everything. I know the clutch is bad.

I bought a diesel vanagon (non-turbo) for the conversion parts. Switched the bellhousing and input shaft to my gas tranny. Bought a passat TD exhaust manifold so it would clear the engine mounts. Needed to rotate turbo. Engine from a Jetta TD - alternator bracket would not work. Engine sits too far back with gas tranny so we had to make 2 inch metal plates to adapt to existing engine mounts. No power steering or a/c yet but both are coming with serpentine belt setup.

45 mpg and these engines are good for well over 500k miles

Actually, what I will do with the transmission conversion...I'm going to take a couple of weeks to pull parts I need for my 240 and then I will sell the rest of the car with the transmission and such to someone who will come and take it away. I live in Chapel Hill NC
