I've been suspicious ever sense the the oil filter debacle

You can bet those goods get put into Febi, Mann and Hengst boxes every day. It would explain why my one year old subframe bushings and engine mounts are about as firm as dog poo that's been rained on.

Basically, there's two groups getting it in the a** on this. First of all, the 'employees' of the Asian sub-continent factories that make these parts barely make a living wage and have to work in appallingly bad conditions. Second, us. The end consumer is getting charged for so-called European name-brand manuafactured parts when in actuality, they are jobbing the spares production out to the Asian subcontinent contractors.

Grrrr.

I just had a long talk to my local parts shop owner. He said that for years they had some of these filters cut open and on display. As has been seen on this site many were filled with cotton waste, twigs, seed pods, etc. All of these filters were bought either from wholesalers unwrapped in boxes of 12 or from the local discount stores. He did this to show his customers why Wally-Mart can sell filters for $1.50 while his cost $3. The unwrapped filters could be sold at $0.95 a piece and still make a profit.

The trouble is that when these cheap filters go on sale at Wally-World customers will be llined up around the block to get them. These stores will only sell what we the public buy.
