1983 300SD - No Fuel?

1983 300SD I am getting no fuel to the injectors. Hand pump pushes the fuel through the filter I opened one of the fuel lines at the injectors and cannot get fuel. I pumped the hand pump for 10 minutes. Also cracked the fuel lines at the injection pump and still no fuel. It seem like it is not going through the IP Where do I start?

Has there been any recent work on the car?

What happend up until now?

are you getting fuel to the mechanical lift pump?

When was the last filter change?

Thank you for responding. The car was running fine. Just hit 300,000 miles the week before last. No recent work. The fuel filters are about 2 months old. Not sure what you mean by the mechanical lift pump. My hand pump is getting fuel to the IP but is seem that nothing is coming out.

I purged the IP and still no start. I am going to change the glow plugs on Monday to see if that is the problem.

DP,

Before you change the GP, test them with an ohmeter and a voltmeter. Its unlikely that all the GP went bad at once. But is is possible the fuse in the GP relay has a crack in it.

With an ohmeter I mean measuring the GP resistance thru the GP cable connector. You first have to remove the cable connector from the GP relay. Put one lead of the ohmeter into the holes in the connector and the other lead to a good ground. A bananna plug works best. Each GP should read 0.6 to 0.9 ohms.

The voltmeter test is just measuring the voltage at each GP when the GP relay is energizing the GP. Each GP should read something close to 12 volts. If there is no voltage at any of the GP, the fuse in the GP relay may have a hairline crack and is not conducting current to the GP.

Have you loosened the connections to the injectors to see if any fuel is being pumped to the injectors.

Whoa, not so fast!

First, see if you are getting fuel.

You can undo fuel supply line, crank the engine, fuel should be pumped out. If so, fuel is entering the IP.

Loosen an injector line, crank the engine, fuel should spit/ooze out. If so, fuel is leaving the IP.

Before you just change the GPs, check them and save $$$.

Don't fix it, or replace it, until you know it's broken.

Best Regards,
Jim

From your description, it sounds like you are pumping (Hand Pump = lift pump) and expecting fuel to come out of injector lines - it does NOT happen this way.
For fuel to come out of the injector lines, the injector pump (IP) needs to rotate. The most convenient way of doing this is to crank the engine.

Here are some steps to follow, guiding your diagnosis:
1. Pump the lift pump. Does it leak diesel fuel out? If so, replacement is highly recommended - air will leak in! This may be your only problem.
2. Losen the IP fuel inlet line (banjo bolt) and operate the lift pump. Fuel should leak from the fuel line at the IP. If any air comes out, continue pumping until air ceases. Tighten fuel line again.
3. Loosen IP return line (banjo bolt) and operate the lift pump. Fuel should leak from the fuel line at the IP. If any air comes out, continue pumping until air ceases. Tighten fuel line again.
4. Loosen ALL injector fuel lines (metal) at the injectors. Crank engine for 30 seconds. Check for fuel at the injector fuel line nuts. If no fuel wait a couple of minutes and crank 30 seconds again. (allow starter motor to cool down)
5. If fuel appears at any injector, tighten that fuel line.
6. If no fuel appears after 3 cranking attempts, you have an IP problem.

Please advise us of your progress.
