Erratic fuel, temp, oil guages 83 300SD

Fuel, temp, oil pressure guages acting squirrely. Temp guage began moving
erratically, first twitching intermittantly, then pegging to maximum temp after driving a few miles. Radiator cleaned, belts good, new water pump and stat last year. The car has no problems except for FTO guage.

After replacing temp sensor and changing out FTO guage cluster, have
traced problem to loose fitting multi-contact round plug which brings signals to FTO cluster in dash.

Cleaned male and female plug/guage contacts, but can't get the plug to keep constant contact. Have same problems with 'old' and 'new' guage cluster.

I can hold the plug in place and get a 'good' contact, but can't do this while driving.

Any solutions? Small jumper leads between M/F contacts? Whatever?
Thanks.
Jones

Lightbulb Hmmm

Contact enhancer paste applied to both sides of connection.

Also remember to check the rectangle plug and the cluster is the path for ground..it comes from the rectangular plug and through a metal strip at the bottom of the speedo on two of the mounting bolts to the other board...when this strip gets severed...you get VERY erradic gauges and oddly enough, high beams

Ask me how I know

Just something to check...

Erratic guages

Thank you very much. Off to purchase contact
enhancer paste. Will check rectangular plug
behind speedo too.

Many thanks.

While you're troubleshooting this issue, just read this entire thread in case your current ideas don't solve the problem.

Thanks to everyone-re bad FTO guage connection

Purchased dielectric contact lube
at parts house. Liberally coated
all male and female connectors
on instrument cluster.

AND.....tightened two loose screws
below speedo as suggested.

Problem solved.
Many thanks.
