Maintenance supplies in the LA area

I'm trying to locate a few good suppliers in the Los Angeles/Long
Beach area that carry the following products (for my "brand new"
'79 MB 240D manual tranny):

RedLine MT-90

Chevron Delo 400-40wt in 5-gallon containers

Diesel Purge from Lubro Moly

At the local Krager (one of the biggest auto part chains in California)
they don't even know these products exist...

Have any of you had any luck in finding these items around here?

Have you tried other big chains (Pep Boys, AutoZone?) I've only seen one place (in Stanton) that has the Redline; I didn't notice if they had Delo or Diesel Purge.

Why not go through online sources?

You can try the following shops. Don't know where exactly you are in LA, but-

Diesel purge and maybe MT90:
Performance Products, Van Nuys
www.************************

Diesel purge type cleaners, and straight weight Delo:
West Marine, Van Nuys
www.westmarine.com

Redline stuff (never been here personally, but heard they distribute Redline):
Bap Geon
3817 Sepulveda Blvd
Culver City, CA 90230

You can buy Delo 400 15/40 at Kragen, Pep Boys, AutoZone and Costco. Its about the same price at Costco as Autozone. I appreciate the fact I can dump 5 gallons of oil at Autozone, so I tend to buy it there. Don't care for Pep Boys "regulated" oil dumping process. I want to get in and get out, not stand there behind some idiot (customer) in the service area.

OK, thank you all, here are the results:

Chevron Delo 400-40wt:

AutoZone is the only one who has it. 1 gallon sized at $12.99 + tax.
No 5-gallon container. It seems a bit overpriced...

Pep Boys doesn't have the Delo-40wt, but they sell the 15W-40 at
$7.49/gallon. Which is a better price than West Marine's, at $10.99
per gallon for the 15W-40 ($52.99 for a 5g ct.) WM doesn't carry
the 40wt either.

Diesel Purge:

so far I've found it only at Performance Products at $10.95

Redline MT-90:

not available at any of the above, I'll have to check with
Bap Geon in Culver City and have them locate a local store they distribute
to. Performance Products had only the RedLine 75W90NS at $ 10.95, but
not the MT-90.

Does anyone know of a tractor supply store or farmer's supply store in
the Torrance (CA) area and surroundings where I'm likely to find the
Delo 400-40wt in 5 gallon containers and at a more reasonable price?

For those interested, I've located a nice supplier of
RedLine MT-90 at a good price, Hoerr Racing Products:

http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?form_prod_id=387,378_3118&action=product

Price for 4 quarts is $31.00 (or $7.75/qt.) and they have
a special on shipping ($5.00 UPS ground) that will last a
week or two.

Still searching for Chevron Delo 400-40wt in 5-gallon cts. Input, anyone?

Rino,

I'm in the South Bay area. Why do you want to use straight 40wt. Delo 400? I've never seen straight 40wt Delo 400, its normally 15/40.

Yes, I'm aware it's hard to find... Actually, in the South Bay area,
I was able to locate straight Delo 400-40wt at AutoZone on
Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance. But they only have the 1-gallon
size (pricey... at $12.99/gallon).

The use of 40wt in my '79 240D was suggested by a knowledgeable
person I trust, who explained he uses straight 40wt for all old diesels.
He said it helps improve compression, among other things...

Your Yoda is way off base. There is no way straight weight oil increases compression. This must have been something his mamma told him.... It will increase oil pressure if bearing wear is an issue. Its like that snake oil "Engine Restore" oil thickener someone posted earlier...

From Chevron page on where to buy Delo multi or straight weight oils:
http://library.cbest.chevron.com/lubes/mktfnder.nsf/California?OpenView
Any of the Red Line and Diesel purge products can be had at Napa or any truck stop or specialty dealer.
Kragen Auto's online has Red Line products, they're here:
http://www.partsamerica.com/Default.aspx
The Chevron Delo 15/40 is $7.99 gal
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=3259&mfrcode=CHV&mfrpartnumber=220059436
I would buy some fuel filters while your at it and carry them in your car, after you purge your system with all that stuff, the filters may clog. If you don't already know, learn how to change the fuel filters and prime your fuel system.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the Chevron page...

Sorry, but no Diesel Purge by Lubro Moly or RedLine MT-90 at
Napa online or Kragen Auto online...

Good advice on keeping some extra fuel filters...

When I was having trouble finding Redline oil I called the company and they put me in touch with the local distributor in the Bay Area who sells me what ever I need. Here's the website: Redline
