Original Owner's Roll Call

Who here among us are the Original Owners of their classic MB diesels?

I know there's a couple of guys who post here who are the original owners of their 240D's.

Who else is out there...?

I can only imagine what these cars must have been like when they were brand spanking new...

1 Family 3 owners

Does 1 Family 3 owners count? I have 228,000 miles this car and my great uncle bought it brand new in 1983, gave it to my grandfather in 1991 and after he passed away I received it in 1999. Thoughts?....Maybe honorable mention.

Ditto, maybe I can't win it even on a technicality,
240D Bought new in 1978 by my stepfathers parents. 10+ years ago they gave it to him after a close call and his father retired from driving. I kind of took over it in high school since he neglected it and hey, it was better than drving a caravan. It started my fondness of MB's.

It doesn't count for me, but my grandmother is the original owner of a '79 300D. It is dark blue, and in perfect condition with a hair over 100k on it. I tried to get her to sell it to me (and so has my mother), but all she says is, "Its the best car I've owned, and the last car I need, so you've got to wait till I die." She's in great health too, so thats probably going to be a long time from now.. Though the car will probably still survive her.

peace,
sam

Thumbs up

Actually I was thinking about how nice my SD was when it was new, I'm amazed people let vehicles get to the condition I scooped up mine in... well that's why I paid next to nothing for it.

And why people like myself give vehicles destined for the boneyard a new lease on life.

I bought my 1981 240D stick shift new. It has been almost trouble free since then. The only problems were vacuum related on the doors and the glow plug relay. I adjusted the valves on more or less a regular basis. Changed the oil every 3000 mi or 1 year. Recently, replaced the chain and rotors in the front. It now needs eng mounts at 140K mi. Never been driven in ice or snow so no rust from salt. Front brake pads replaced at least once. I think this car could go on forever with normal maintenance. I took a lot of ribbing when I bought the car. Co-workers were saying something like I could buy 2 Chevys for this Mercedes. But I wonder where the Chevys would be now? My office buddy bought an Olds Diesel- ugh.

I ordered my E300 in April of 1999 and took delivery on June 7th. Got the car exactly the way I wanted it, just before they stopped sending them here.

My father bought my '87 300D when I was six, and I rode shotgun or backseat--and now driver's seat--in it ever since. It was one of the two cars I learned to drive in, also. He kind of bought it on a whim ... he had owned a 240D, his mother had a 300D and his father had had a 280SE, so Mercedes is in the bloodlines. He went to look at 190Ds in 1987 and they told him to take this new 300D for a test drive, that it was really something else. Game over. Ha. Anyway, I can remember it being garaged for a short time (a REALLY big deal in our household) and was quite an attention-getter. I have lots of memories to go with my car, which is one of the reasons its imperfections don't bother me. On the dashboard, when the sunlight hits it a certain way, you can see that the dashboard says "DAD'S CAR, DON'T TOUCH!" ... I wrote that in the dust on the dashboard when I was 7, and I guess it caused some sort of weird sunstaining, because it kind of appears in certain lights. One of my other funny early MB memories (well, not so "funny"): about a year after my dad bought it, my mother backed her 1987 diesel GMC Suburban into the left headlamp. I will never forget having this bad feeling, turning around and seeing that Mercedes getting closer at a rapid pace (too fast to warn mom) and just freezing. If I'd known the word "*****" at that age, I'd have thought it!!!

So, yes, I count myself an original owner of my MB. Now if I could only get my dad to dig up his original reciept for the car ...

I bought my first 240D manual new in 1977 and drove it 280,000 miles. I bought my second one in 1985 with 17,000 miles on it.

One of the beauties of these cars is that they drive the same with a half million miles on them as they did when new. When I got out of my 280,000 mile 240D into one with 17,000 miles, they felt remarkably alike. The difference was just cleanliness and the fact that I didn't pull the dipstick between oil changes for a long time.

Have a great day,

I bought my Benz 22 years ago for $40,000 with 48 month, 48,000 mile warrenty. I enjoy it now (everything still works) as my daily driver as much as as when it was new . However, what do I replace it with when it dies?
