Coverlay must be cut to fit. If it is in a bind it will warp. It may warp anyway. It has a warranty for free replacement. Someone makes a cap like coverlay that is not shiny. I saw one on a 123 coupe. Coverlay can also be painted like seat covers.

I would spend the few extra bucks to buy the hard cap like a coverlay instead of the rug. Your choice.

OK, I might regret this later, but I just ordered a DashMat (in black).
They don't make the molded fabric model for the 240D, so I went for
the original (plain) DashMat. What the heck... just $23.95... I can
always discard it and order the expensive item from PP if I don't like it.
I'll let you know as soon as I get it... Thanks all for contributing.

I know of a DashCup in my area but its going on my 240D. I have a self made dashmat on my '99 VW NB TDI that I custom made. I fabricated a paper template and then used a piece of carpet cut from the template-however my VW Dash is Completely flat so it was an easy make. I used dull black carpeting and then had the sides trimmed with Red vinyl piping--looks great ! May be difficult on a MB as the air ducts may be difficult to achieve a perfect fit on and around . Still may be worth a try as you then could use a nice piece of high grade carpet. My only complaint on the Dashmats is the material was kind of light-still they never deteriorated and I had 3 of them.

Living in Australia, We don't get the option to purchase a dash cap from our auto parts stores, so our ONLY options are:
1. Display the cracked dash or
2. Cover it with a dash mat.

The one on my car matches the blue interior and I like it MUCH more than seeing the minor cracks in the dash. It is in the photo at the top of this post.

after seeing this thread i decided to check out dashmat. i hemmed and hawed for a few days, putting the item in my cart and not ordering it, then one day i just did it. it came today and must say it's pretty nice. a big improvement over the cracked dash.

i have a dash cap for my truck, and while i don't love it, it's ok because i am changing the interior color on that anyway. but i don't think that they look stock or that great. not being able to access the dash speakers would irritate me. course that's just me.

anyway, the dashmat, fit for the 300D in black (same color as the dash) looks good to me. better than i expected

i did made one boo boo though by ordering the one for the climate sensor, so it has a little square missing where that would be... i thought mine had that..... but seeing as how it is black on black, you cant really see it at all. maybe i'll have a hula girl come up through that.

i am just glad i didn't order the tan or something

I have the "rug" solution on my cracked dash and it doesn't look too ghetto. However, no one has mentioned another important benefit with these carpeted dash covers: mine seems to help keep the interior cool in the summer because I get less heat bouncing off the hard vinyl surface of the original dash. And these cars need all the help they can get in keeping the cabin comfy in 100 degree summers.

I have the dash "rug", but I use to keep my newly replaced dash from getting damaged. I was going to replace my cracked down the middle dash with a cap, but when I felt and saw one i was concerned about the look, feel and sound of the hard plastic. I hated paying for a new dash, but I sure like the look and dividing the cost over the years I hope to keep it, the cost is low.

I have the dashmat on my SD and I like it as it gives me something to clip my cellphone and work badge to when I'm driving.

Only problem is: GSM phones, when they are synching your email, cause my SD speedometer to jump, even when at a full stop and the CD skips and the speakers buzz....but that's another thread.......
