My first parts car

I have been talking with these folks for 6 months on and off, and the day before I drive down to Austin to get some stuff from Greg and Randy, boom they call me and accepted my offer of a few months ago.
Car is a 1977 300D that broke a timing chain. Car has 4 new tires, 5 rebuilt injectors that the owner said hasn't even had a full tank of fuel through. All seats and door trim are scary nice, but alas I don't have black interior. Car also came with 615, 616, 617.91 engine manual, 5 new in the box glow plugs (that was a suprise), 5 new crush washers for injectors, and a new block heater element. It is the same color as my wagon "used to be silver base metal".
Anyway, kind of fun to bring home your first parts car. I'm guessing since the timing chain broke that everything worked prior to the destruction. It has the evil climate control servo. Anyway to test one of those.
SWMBO does not seem to share in my excitement. Wonder why..........

You're hooked; this stuff is waaaay more addictive than crack cocaine.

Today I put over 200 miles on the wagon looking for/at property in north central Texas and the only thing I really remember from the entire trip is the exact location of two potential parts cars. And, tomorrow morning early, I'm heading to Houston for another fix: a W115

I keep telling myself: "you can stop any time..."

PS: is that your tractor?

It's funny. I AM hooked. Really hooked. And I've still never driven a properly operating diesel Mercedes. It has always been grossly underpowered, maybe a linkage problem, maybe a chain/inj. timing issue. Oh heck, I forgot to mention above. I also got a new in the box timing chain, tensioning rail, inner and outer lower rail, tensioner assy.(labeled non-turbo) with gasket, all in the packaging from Performance Products. All for $250.
I am going through I guess a normal "hey, why don't I just throw another NA engine in the car and not tear it to pieces" stage, but the PO did sooo much freakin rewiring that it would be a massive project, and still just be another sedan with an auto-tranny and the evil climate control servo. It's too bad, though, as there is no rust at all. The rear window seal is bad, and trunk was damp. New spare too, and I wanted steel wheels with hubcaps.
I will of course offer parts to yall when I finally come to grips with the cars destruction. I had to let it roll down their driveway and out into the street to get in position for the rollback tow-truck, and it went over the big dip in the road better than my wagon.
Keep your eyes open, they are out there. And lowball politely and wait, as very few folks want these cars in good shape, much less with a terminal issue.

And yes Randy, that is my old '68 Ford 3000 diesel tractor. By FAR the most reliable diesel at my house. used to have a '48 Ford 8N, possibly my most cherished mechanical device ever! But it wasn't much fun to mow with

We must have been typing at the same time. I very much have wanted to change to steel wheels and hubcaps, so I want to keep them. They will need painting as they are pretty much just chrome with no paint left.
I'm sorry,
JL

Ford 8N

My father bought an 8N in 1961, and sold it with the property he bought it for, in perhaps 1985 -- used it regularly & hardly did anything to it .....

I later toured the country for 5 yrs playing concerts in small towns (for Community Concerts), and was astounded how many 8Ns I saw in rural areas, still looking functional, and a lot of them looking restored. They were all over the country, & I bet they still are. Great machines.

They made 400000 to 500000 a year from late 47 to 52 or 53.(I forget now, but used to know that stuff). 9Ns were made several years prior to the 8N, and were rather similar with only 3 fwd gears and one brake on each side instead of both on the right. Rather awkward. I love looking on ebay and different websites at old tractors. It's just what we like: ALL MECHANICAL! I had to remember how to set points though...
I sold mine for 2K, which is a very good price for one in good shape, to a little old retired guy who said it had spent it's last night outside! Very sorry to see him drive that little tractor over to his trailer I loved that tractor. It sounded like something from the '40s

Welcome to the club
I have a disabled 84 300TD in my driveway, currently with no engine, hood or drivers door as it slowly gets taken apart- would make such a nice lawn ornament dont you think?

Somebody on here needs a rear wiper motor. McRoth I think. There's another thread going about it. Is the wagon going to be totally parted out?

JL

You know, it doesn't have to be that way... I know where there are manual trannies, extra driveshafts, manual heating-cooling controls, etc.

However, I would be hesitant about doing much with that car because of the leak in the trunk. That's probably from a rusted-out pinch weld underneath the middle of the rear window. Problematic to fix on a good car much less a non-runner

Get outta my way!

The result of today's road trip. Definitely a centerpiece for the entropy workshop:
