1980 and 1983 240D
I have two 240D cars a 1980 and 83 and I have the same problem with both of them. They will not crank with out spraying starter fluid into the air intake. I know this is not good for the cars, but I dont no where to start in fixing the problem. If I plug it up it helps a little" I think", but I still have to spray, just not as much. after the car sits for 30 mins or longer you have to spray even on hot days. when cranking, it will blow out black smoke but with out the spray will not start. I thought the glow plugs were bad but I don't want to just start replaceing parts. When I spray the starter fluid it seems to make the engine turn over faster and then it starts, could this be a bad starter. ( bat is new) :confused

Welcome to the forum.
The first place to start is with the glow plugs. You can do a search on "glow plugs" and get volumes of information from previous posts on the forum. In a nutshell: You need to determine if you are getting voltage to the glow plugs. If so, then the plugs themselves should be checked for resistance and replaced, if necessary. If not, then the glow plug relay is suspect. The fuse may have cracked or the relay itself may not be functioning. |

Stop the madness
Stop spraying now!! Sounds like you have bad glow plugs or bad compression which may be valves that need adjustment. If you can't sort it out yourself get them to a shop that can deal with the problem before you blow both of them up.

You really cannot enjoy ownership of your cars with that problem. Really important to find out the reason. Neither your batteries or starters will take endless abuse. First thing to master when owning diesels is the glow plug system in my opinion as it's will cause problems from time to time anyways and is really quite easy to deal with once you totally understand it. Try to study the searches on this site and other literature you come across relating to this problem. Or even better try to find somebody in your area to help you understand it as well. The relatively cheap haynes manual may be of some help too. Nobody wants to spend money without reason but one of the better investments may be an economical volt ohmeter as well. Taken care of it will enable a lifetime of use and save you a fortune over the years. Oh yes welcome to this site as obviously having two 240ds you will learn a lot and develop knowledge plus self confidence. Know all the good folks here have increased my knowledge and ability tremendously. The major problem with learning is if it comes too easy. A little struggle in the process seems to cement new learning to the mental processes better.
